Very good intro to message queueing, with a reasonable use case

I found this to be concise and informative. It stays clear of detailed engineering recommendations in favor of an overview of what's happening. It walks you through an example that is topical enough to hold one's interest, and I found it particularly useful when talking about the differences between queries (which don't modify database content) and commands (which do). The difference becomes significant when you think about this sort of architecture, which is what this book is designed to do. This book is a very good "why would you do message queuing?" argument, without being breathless or preachy.

My one suggestion for this book has to do with how one solves a certain sort of pesky problem in the real world: customers don't want to go to a web page and then get a message back via email, log into the website again, get another message, and so on: the Health Care Exchange example dodges this (likely) requirement. I'd say that's fair -- it would have cluttered things up. A nod in that direction and a hint or two ("We'd use this or that technique if we had to accommodate a user who wants 'service while he waits'") would have been helpful.

I'd say this is very good value for the money!

Concise, readable, useful

This is a very (very!) concise introduction and explanation covering message queues and service-oriented architecture without distracting you by referencing specific vendors or stacks. Concepts are explained simply and layered on top of each other carefully at a good level of abstraction, making each easy to digest. Design for a service similar to healthcare.gov is used a single continuing conceptual example, and it makes for an entertaining and relevant demonstration. I especially appreciated the section on logging and how to trace activity related to messages as they traverse the system and spawn new messages.

I would have liked to see a bit more treatment on testing components across the bus, but you can't have everything.

Even so, this is a normative reference I am now eagerly recommending to everyone I am introducing these topics to. (I'd happily buy print copies if I could so I could have leave them with people who would otherwise not go buy it and read it on a Kindle.)

This book was a refreshing change of pace from the gigantic tomes you usually find in this area.

Nagged, however, by responsibility to himself and for posterity, he makes a third trip to the past. Readers who can willingly suspend disbelief and endure rather undistinguished prose will be rewarded by scenes of cliff-hanging and head-bashing, slaughter, torture and hairsbreadth escapes, all yeasted up by true romance and wholesome sex. Surprisingly Excellent

I'm a time travel, historical fiction freak. So I key word searched my library catalogue, and that's how I ended up with this one. I love England and Italy; I don't love Russia. But this one was hard to put down.

Alex is a history professor whose area of expertise is Russian history. He's experienced odd dreams that seem to place him in Russia during the time of the Revolution, and these dreams have begun to morph into actually taking him back there, first landing in a trench during the war and returning with grass stains and mud on the knees of his jeans.

A previous girlfriend, a journalist, returns, wanting to connect with him about some much heralded and speculative information having to do with the revolution that suggests something other than accepted history is what happens.

Their love rekindled (she'd wanted to marry earlier, but left because he was unable to commit), she provides the anchor that pulls him back to the present each time, though both are unaware of the necessity of that until he meets his father on one of his travels to the path and is enlightened on how the process works.

Which is why his father is stuck there. His wife was killed in a plane crash, and as these travels simply happen, rather than being willed, his father was unable to return. In the process, Alex is forced to face his unhappy childhood and hatred for his father.

His trips last longer and longer. He becomes involved in the history, wondering if he's unwittinly altering it or creating it. He's hunted by the government, thrown in prison for a time. He's on the run from the powers that be and from his father who, a despot in the current regime, is out to specifically change the flow of events and attempting to force Alex into aiding him.

Rasputin, Lenin, Nicholas and Alexandra, and others all make appearances. I have no idea if it's historically accurate, but others who know say it is, and that adds to its appeal for me, though I didn't know it was when I read it. I'm so pleased to find there are others, equally as good, by the same author.

This book holds your attention. It was difficult to put down. It is the only book I've ever read that has Russia as part of its plot. I haven't seen Doctor Zhivago, I haven't read any of Doestyvsky's novels, and I don't care about them, either. So that I read this one voraciously is an indication, to me anyway, of how well Allen bridges the two worlds.

I read all types of books and this one had been sitting on my shelf for sometime. i picked it up on a friday and was done with it by monday evening.

i was hooked and didn't want to do anything, but read!

i am glad to give it another great review! if you like time travel, and history this is for you!

Best Time Travel Series

Just bought it. Again. Have the books. Now I have the electronic edition.

My favorite all time authors - of which I include Mr. Appel, are in no particular order Stephen Hunter, Robert Jordan, James H. Cobb's Amanda Garrett series, Harry Turtledove, Steven Brust, Heinlein, Niven, Pournelle, and dozens of others from Burroughs to Verne. I've read deeply into nearly every genre. I admit that I really liked Stephanie Meyers books (thanks to my wife and teenage daughter). Never cared for the Harry Potter books at all. I've really enjoyed Gould, the guy who wrote Jumper and a few other interesting sci-fi stories. Connelly, Parker, Leonard, some Patterson. Some stories I enjoy most as unabridged audio novels rather than paper - Zane Grey westerns, John Grisham, and a few others.

The reason I like Allen's stories so much is the total immersion into suspension of disbelief. I not only enjoy the story, I learn history, and I learn some really cool writing style elements. For example, toward the end of the first Alex B. book, he bends down to pick up a gun from a person who was killed. He acknowledges the heavier than it looks weight of it, and the warmth it still held from it's previous owner. These little things are so true to a persons real experience that I had to pause and admire it. The old adage about showing not telling. Your stories are full of scenes like that. When you get a good book, it's like you are there, in the story, better than high definition.

I hope your Balfour stories can take off in Kindle, Allen. Readers who discover them will certainly enjoy them as one of the best time travel series around.

About the Author

M.D. Roblyer

M.D. Roblyer has been a technology-using teacher, professor, and contributor to the field of educational technology for nearly 40 years and has authored or co-authored hundreds of books, monographs, articles, columns, and papers on educational technology research and practice. Her other books for Pearson Education include Starting Out on the Internet: A Learning Journey for Teachers; Technology Tools for Teachers: A Microsoft Office Tutorial (with Steven C. Mills); and Educational Technology in Action: Problem-based Exercises for Technology Integration.

She began her exploration of technology’s benefits for teaching in 1971 as a graduate student at one of the country’s first successful instructional computer training sites, Pennsylvania State University, where she helped write tutorial literacy lessons in the Coursewriter II authoring language on an IBM 1500 dedicated instructional mainframe computer. While obtaining a Ph.D. in instructional systems at Florida State University, she worked on several major courseware development and training projects with Control Data Corporation’s PLATO system. In 1981–1982, she designed one of the early microcomputer software series Grammar Problems for Practice, in conjunction with the Milliken Publishing Company.

Currently, Dr. Roblyer is Adjunct Professor of Instructional Technology and Distance Education (ITDE) at Nova Southeastern University, chairing dissertations for ITDE doctoral students. She serves on editorial boards of various technology and research journals and is past-president of two AERA Special Interest Groups. Her current research focus is promoting student success in virtual school environments and exploring ways to increase interactive qualities in virtual courses. She is married to fellow FSU Ph.D., William R. Wiencke and is the mother of a daughter, Paige.

Aaron H. Doering

Aaron Doering is an associate professor in the Learning Technologies program at the University of Minnesota. He holds the Bonnie Westby Huebner Endowed Chair in Education and Technology, is a co-director of the Learning Technologies Media Lab, is a Laureate of the prestigious humanitarian Tech Awards, and is a fellow for the University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment. Doering received his Ph.D. in instructional systems and technology and a masters in geography.

Doering serves on numerous editorial boards and gives hundreds of talks a year on adventure learning, engagement, and motivation and his academic writing is focused on how to design and develop adventure learning (AL) environments, the impact of AL inside and outside the classroom, designing and developing online distance learning environments, and K-12 technology integration. He is also the PI of numerous projects such as Earthducation, an investigation of education and sustainability on every continent; Explore15, a user-driven adventure learning environment where students and teachers create their own AL environments; North of Sixty, where students throughout the world are collecting, analyzing, and sharing climate change data; and GeoThentic, a learning environment where teachers teach and students learn geography using geospatial technologies.

Doering has always had a passion for the environment and education from his childhood days of growing up on a farm in southern Minnesota. He always realized that our personal actions have a huge impact on our environment and that we need to be cognizant of how we are all interconnected. From his experiences teaching middle and high school social studies, to working at the National Geographic Society, to the thousands of miles he has spent crossing the circumpolar Arctic, Doering’s mission in life is to make a difference in the world through education.

Excellent textbook presentation

This book is an excellent resource for teachers and schools looking to train teachers in the use of educational technology. The focus is not using technology for technology's sake, but integrating technology into the classroom. A very balanced approach--technology is used to enhance education and motivate students, it will not improve education just by simply bringing it into your classroom. Probably equally as good for teaching a college course.

It's already outdated and several of the websites/URLs mentioned don't exist anymore. I needed this book for a class, but it's pretty useless otherwise. A book on this subject should be impressive and innovative; this is not.

Seems reasonable

It starts with showing the goal of financial freedom. Then it puts down fundamental analysis as requiring high skills. Then it shows advantages of technical trading. Then it lists the requirements of making a trading strategy, like having a historical data provider to back test. Then it covers trader's psychology: how a trader can feel about the sunk cost fallacy, fear when actually experiencing losses, and overconfidence. Then it lists tips from professional traders. Then it says how to make a trading strategy and lists four of them. Finally the author plugs his web site saying that it will help to make a personalized trading strategy.

The trading strategies listed in the book seem reasonable.

This is an ENLIGHTENING read to say the least takes the mystery out of leveraged trading strategies. We've all neurotically obsessed about the ups and downs and overlooked the bigger picture & game plan at times, but The 30-Minute Stock Trader breaks down the most common pitfalls and time wasting activities and offers a powerful system for amateur and pro investors alike. He is a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University, and teaches high school in New Jersey. This is the 2nd book I ordered and it is NOT THE RIGHT EDITION!!!! I ordered the 5th edition, and got the 4th edition AGAIN!!!!!

I was sent the fourth edition. I'm going to keep it because I'm assuming the material is mostly similar, but that's pretty obnoxious to post that you're selling the Fifth Edition of the book if you're not actually selling it.

This works but is the wrong version for the AFAA Group Instructor certification so the page numbers do not match the study guide for the certification. Made things a bit more difficult
