Schultz is the founder and CEO of Starbucks, a company that began as a small Seattle distributor of coffee beans and ground coffee that he transformed into what it is today, inspired by the espresso shops he visited in Italy. Schultz described the founding of Starbucks in his first book, Pour Your Heart into It (1997). Written with Joanne Gordon, a former Forbes writer and contributing editor, this account is a spotlight on the period of 2007�08, when the company lost some of its vision due to overexpansion and the pressure to maintain unabated growth. Seeing that Starbucks was becoming a victim of its own success, Schultz returned to the CEO position after eight years away from overseeing daily operations of the company. He details the struggle to maintain the identity of Starbucks while attempting to branch out into areas such as music sales and hot food, facing competition and the oversaturation that caused the company the painful closing of about 600 stores in 2008. Starting a business is tough, but keeping it going is even tougher

I read this book specifically to better understand a CEO's perspective in starting a company and then coming back to save it. Howard Schultz's very personalized account demonstrates the commitment needed to keep a vision and mission statement going as later leaders start to vary from the initial vision and as the economy inevitably affects the business. Schultz casts some blame on leaders who succeeded him, but most of Starbucks' issues seemed to be caused by the recession more so than internal decisions. If one recalls how many personal finance experts were recommending to skip the $4 latte as a way of saving money, this loss of business they suffered through 2008-9 shouldn't have been too much of a surprise.

With that said, the book was still interesting in seeing the difficulty of micro-focusing on each individual customer experience while simultaneously macro-focusing on growth. There are definitely advantages to being on every street corner, but the more spread out the company becomes the harder it is to make that experience unique but consistent for those who want the same product and experience in any location, fast but leisurely for those who aren't in a hurry, and successful for the company that can't help but focus on growth when opening multiple stores every day. Schultz effectively describes all the variables he considered through this time period to "thread the needle" to get the best of this small and big focus.

While it's hard to recognize that the successful companies we depend upon are typically short-lived, this book does a good job of showing why. A founder's focus and commitment to the original vision for a company is difficult to pass on to successors who have to be equally if not more committed to pushing it forward and adapting to changing customer tastes and competitive threats. As Schultz points out here, his successors couldn't accomplish that even though they were good people. Like Michael Dell of Dell Computer, Schultz cared and resolved to come back and make the necessary adjustments to carry Starbucks through. The average CEO probably wouldn't do that. And--as other reviewers have observed--what will happen the next time Schultz retires. It's why so many businesses don't last over extended periods and inevitably submit to competitors who come up with better ideas.

Even several years after it was published, this book is a good read to understand these long-term challenges that all businesses face. Today--as Sears, J.C. Penney and (gasp) even Walmart--seem destined to fail, "Onward" helps to explain why killer business models must be constantly tweaked or else they will eventually stagger and then fail.

I wanted to like this book couldn't. It's a self-absorbed resume of persuasion.

Have you ever purchased a book and once you started reading it wondered?:

1. Is it ever going to get better?
2. I can't wait until I complete this book because I just want it to be over.
3. Maybe I'll just cut my losses and put the book on the book shelf to collect dust.

Well, that's how I felt...
I love Starbucks. I spend a lot of money at Starbucks...I'm a gold card member...if there were a platinum or titanium level, I'd probably be there too.

But in this book, Howard Schultz is pretty darn good at tooting his own horn. Over and over and over and over again. Over again, over again. Redundant yet? This book is similarly redundant with constant praises of himself and his company.

It reads like a few-hundred page resume, trying to seamlessly convince the audience why he is a great CEO, motivator, outside-the-box thinker. It provides antidotes, paragraphs from e-mails and justifications for his reasons of why he wrote what he wrote or said what he said at conferences, letters to partners or to his investors. Not much interesting substance.

The word "I" is in the book way too much. It's narcissistic, providing little insight to the inner workings of Starbucks. He gives a few, brief synopsis for certain things, but not too much in depth or anything of interest.

It's like he wrote a cover letter like a prospective employee would write to convince a future employer of why he is or Starbucks is the best candidate.

One Cup At A Time

You are moving along at warp speed, everything seems to be going well. Profits are at an all time high, stores are being opened at record pace, you have a culture of dedicated corporate and local store employess, and suddenly the sky is falling. The original ceo comes out of retirement and what drastic and often unheard of steps does he take to right the ship?

I think the CEO Schultz to be one of the smartest entrepreneurs I have ever had the pleasure of reading and researching. Having taught Retail Management at the College level for over 15 years, I have enjoyed reading and presenting the works of many startup managements. Bernie and Arthur from Home Depot were the last men I studied in detail. (Read their book Built From Scratch) You can buy a used hardback from Amazon for one penny and gain knowledge that is invaluable.)

In all business you can hire specialist and experts to manage the business. But to determine its core values and access and make sure the business maintains the selected course, that requires a man of Schultz's character ,intelligence and ability and willingness to stay the course. And few possess his ability. When he wrote that " a merchant's success depends on his or her's ability to tell a story," quote me anyone else in the industry who has penned that same statement.

"What people hear or smell or see, or do when they enter a space guides their feelings, enticing them to celebrate coffee." Starbucks was trying to be all things to all people". They had lost their way. They had put their core values aside, Their stores were lost in the wilderness. Their path to ultimate destruction was paved with very good intentions.

As Moses did many eons ago, Schultz had to take up his staff and lead the employees back to the promised land. They had climbed the mountain and along the way they dropped the tablets and simply kept on going. They were slowly entering the retail fire that would consume the business and ultimately the organization. Schultz recognized the problem almost immediately and in a very short period of time, other managers finally came forward and confessed they were aware of the difference as well. And then he took action by regaining his position CEO and not only righted the ship but set it back on its proper course.

I don't think there has ever been another manager who initially set the course of a business as a startup maximized his vision, left the reins to others, and then came back and saved the bacon for everyone. Mr. Schultz you are one sharp cookie. You get it and you are willing to act. To the victor goes the spoils and as I wrote at the beginning of this book, in my opinion you are the BEST.

Aly Bain's Eclectic Tune Collection

This collection spans a wide variety of Celtic styles, including Shetland Islands tunes. Several tunes in flat keys are presented, along with several hornpipes, jigs, polkas, reels and a few strathspeys. Interesting biographical information is also presented on some of the greats of Scotttish violin, including James Scott Skinner and the Gows. My copy was used, and unfortunately the CD did not come with it. I recommend getting a copy with the recording since the best way to get the feel of these tunes is to hear them played by a great musician like Aly Bain.

REAL DEAL.

Tara Gesling is the real deal. I have explored many authors and avenues, seeking information about my RA diagnosis at the ripe old age of 29. I used to teach Weston A. Price classes on fermented foods and traditional diets. I had explored everything, GAPS diet, Specific carbohydrate diet, etc. And then... I had the good fortune to meet Gesling grocery shopping and was inspired to check out her book. She explores autoimmunity beyond the surface issues of gluten and leaky gut, and does chronic illness patients a huge service in doing so! She gets to the underlying emotional roots, environmental toxins, etc. She has an impressive body of knowledge, and communicates in language the lay person understands. Reading her book is like listening to a person in everyday conversation. What a wonderful author! What a timely and important book! This work is unsuspecting. It is not expensive nor does it come with a glam shiny cover. It's not on Dr. Oz, yet. I'm writing this review because people need to check this one out.

First of all let me just say this is such a good read I just love this book. The information in this book is invaluable to the world with so many of us being diagnosed or dying with a multitude of various cancers, autoimmune diseases, and chronic illness. . Everything that Tara says really resonated with me on the healing powers that we can take into our own hands just by doing our homework, not just trusting our diagnosis doctors who want to prescribe pharmaceuticals that have side effects almost worse than the disease itself. This book is geared completely towards holistic health and will not only give you the tools and knowledge to better health but it will make you want to take better care of yourself because it gives you the faith that it will matter and make a difference. Tara story is nothing short of miraculous. She was suffering in a wheelchair at 30 with a whole host of diseases, with all the junk food she was pouring in, her body was no longer healthy. Tara turned her world around by implementing natural changes and healthy living found in this book and you can too.

This is such a great book ! It's not only a good source of informations but also a motivation to switch our daily habbits. I found this book here on amazon when searching about thyroid problems. I have no idea how I found it but I am so happy because I learned a lot of stuff about the way this new generation got use to eat so much chemical and still think that it's normal. Just take the time to look at ingredients behind every commercial food that you eat daily and we clearly see that something is wrong ! We support all those big brands selling those cheap food products. Invest in your health NOW ! Support local farms. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their health daily !

A Harvard Law School faculty member since 1964, Dershowitz is noted for representing controversial and unpopular clients. In addition to tomes on the law and two novels, he wrote a 1987 book prescribing a remedy to save American Jews (The Vanishing American Jew). In this further demonstration of his versatility, he turns to 10 stories from Genesis to demonstrate how the Bible provides a basis for contemporary ideas about justice and injustice. The narratives deal with Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Dina, Tamar and Joseph. Dershowitz includes a translation of each story, recounts some theological commentaries and offers his own interpretations. He acknowledges the failings of the biblical characters, pointing out that they were guilty of deception, lust, crime, incest, revenge and murder. Their problematic actions highlighted the need for the laws that appear later in the Torah, starting with Exodus and the Ten Commandments. The book concludes with four chapters on "The Genesis of Justice in the Injustice of Genesis." Dershowitz argues that the "bad actions" depicted in Genesis gave rise to the "common law of justice." He addresses the question of theodicy, claiming that the belief in the hereafter solves the problem of why evil exists on earth. Finally, he asserts that the stories he has examined explain the need for judicial codes. The book makes an important contribution by clearly validating this claim, although Dershowitz disregards the stories' significance as a basis for moral and ethical development. (Mar.)

Harvard law professor Dershowitz has written a dazzling and stimulating commentary on ten Old Testament stories and how they provide the origins for today's laws. In a familiar style that evokes being in a small seminar with the professor, Dershowitz takes ten biblical stories, including those of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Lot, and offers multiple views on their application today. His view is that the Book of Genesis reveals the origins of justice in society. Ranging over such topics as the insanity defense, police corruption, federal sentencing guidelines, and the defense of the guilty, the book provokes the reader to consider God's fairness as well as that of our current justice system. In the best Socratic tradition, Dershowitz (Reversal of Fortune) asks many questions and provides multiple scholarly and commonsense views of the lessons to be learned from the biblical tales. He ends the book with a discussion of the Ten Commandments and shows how they can be traced to the stories of Genesis. For believers of all faiths, as well as nonbelievers, this is an outstanding work.

In his new book, the author of, most famously, Chutzpah (1991) argues that the quest for justice is the main theme of the Bible's first book. The subsequent books of the Pentateuch are much fuller of actual rules and regulations, beginning with the Ten Commandments, but the process that culminated in them is the gist of Genesis. Dershowitz re-presents 10 stories, from the fall of Adam and Eve to the saga of Joseph and his brothers, and discusses the crucial midrashim, or rabbinic interpretations, made about their import relative to justice. Dershowitz does not merely summarize old opinions and arguments; he adds evidence and lessons from his own law practice to point up the stories' continuing relevance to the practice of justice today. Overall, he shows that there are two distinct developments. First, God grows in understanding of humanity and changes his mind about how to deal with his creation, nowhere more strikingly or with greater implications for justice than when he lets Abraham convince him to spare the few righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah from his destruction of those cities. Second, justice increasingly, though never unequivocally and completely, becomes concerned with individual persons' guilt and innocence rather than collective guilt. And what quality of the Jews enabled them to drive those developments? Why, that tireless assertiveness known as chutzpah--of course. Ray Olson

Great questions but...

In "The Genesis of Justice" the brilliant teacher/lawyer Alan Dershowitz examines the first book of the bible as the foundation of Western legal tradition. His amazing insights into what these ancient biblical stories have to say about injustice are something that everyone who is concerned about justice should read. This book is full of questions I have never thought to ask. Dershowitz's Jewish background leads him to approach the text from a direction that most Americans would never even conceive of. The world of rabbincal theology was opened to me for the first time and I found I want to know more.

Having said all that, this is not a theology textbook. It is a book about the law, so don't come to this book looking for good theology; either Jewish or Christian. Dershowitz's conclusions about God's justice, ominiscience, and perfection stretch the bounds of orthodoxy of both faiths. He reads Genesis and takes his theology straight from it without using the entire Old Testament to inform his views on the above characteristics of the Lord. I found this a bit frustrating, but don't let that stop you from reading this well done and thought provoking book by a brilliant mind.

reread it after a decade

I searched this book out, not for religious reasons, but for Dershowitz's view of lawlessness into lawfulness. There is perhaps no older documentation of crime and punishment tails written, and perhaps no other grander discection of the book of genesis. Foregoing the obvious applause to the author, this book allows one to think without bias, to reason without emotion, and to question the origins of the law. A must for anyone that will ever be in a position to parent, mentor or judge.

professor, the reader follows the development of the concept of
justice. Consider the flawed personalities in the Book of
Genesis... it's like watching 5 seasons of Law & Order: Adam and
Eve (expulsion); Cain and Abel (murder and favoritism); Noah, Abraham
and Isaac (attempted murder, the akedah), Hagar and Sarah; Abraham,
Sodom and ten good people (collective punishment?); Esau and Jacob
(bait & switch, verbal contracts and trickery); Jacob and Laban;
Hamor, circumcision, and Jacob's sons; Joseph and his
brothers. Dershowitz provides an enlightening read and ready access to
commentaries that remove the rose-colored glasses from the stories you
heard as a child.

Watch out for the quiet ones ...hot damn

Well my friends I have to tell you I am a huge fan of Charlie Richards and I always expect 3 things from her books
1-Interesting characters
2-Interesting situations and
3-Interesting hot sexy love
And this author never has let me down. Collins Desoto introduction to the paranormal world was to say the least shocking and unexpected. To have him be mated to a paranormal is just plain fun. The lucky man to get his hands on this detective is the quiet Tristan who well surprised me on how down right sexy and bold he can be what a charmer ...yum. Trust me when I say you will not regret giving your time to this Hot-Blooded Alligator.

While I do enjoy the ongoing story arc, it always feel like most of the story occurs off page. Cliff hangers are fine, expected even in this series; just wish that in the next installment more detail is given in resolving the cliffhanger than just a few sentences. Definitely not stand alone.

It's lonely deep in the very back of the closet

I waited a while for the release of the Gator's story. He is my first encounter with an Alligator shifter. Every since I first met him in one of the earlier books in the series I've been eager to read his story. Tristan has led such a sad life. From being sent away from his Alligator family at a young age to the terrible life he lived during the many years he was held captive in Bud Wallice's slideshow. Coming to live at the Gargoyles compound was his first chance to lead a normal adult shifter's life.

But Tristan tired of all the gawkers and cruelty wanted...needed time to heal and relax in his new "safe" environment. It meant being able to lie out in the sun, swim leisurely in his Alligator form, and be left alone in an isolated part of the estate. Some worried about his isolation from everyone others recognized it was what he needed. Still when an opportunity came to involve him with helping round up the people responsible for his captivity he brought what came to be known as his patented patient interrogation style.

The last thing he expected when the police detective Collin DeSoto went to the Gargoyle compound was to not only find the missing man he was searching for, but be fiercely attracted to the gorgeous albino Alligator he meets for the first time. Deeply closeted Detective DeSoto has always been very circumspect in his male/male encounters. He and his family are very close, gathering together regularly, so Collin hears nasty homophobic comments frequently. He suffers silently even enduring the many women his family invites to join them since they are determined to see him marry.

Tristan recognizes Collin immediately as his mate and sets out to make him his. Everyone on the estate is shocked by his behavior because of his usually reserved personality. How he handles his mate's family remains to be seen? How Collin handles the Gargoyles imprisoning people and interfering with his investigation is the least of his problems. How he handles his interfering homophobic family and keep them from hurting the very special man/Alligator he grown to care for is what concerns him the most?

Absolute beginners may be absolutely satisfied

Both Book One and Two of this series are good intro level for those who want to learn guitar and the basic music theory & TAB chord reading .. After 2 months on book one started book two ( as well as another book that goes into arpeggios in detail)and in looking back I have learned more than I had realized and have no music background . This is thanks to the skill of Susan Mazer and the Guitar workshop who created this format .

Really a well thought out music study aid. Much to take in, yet well organized. I believe most guides can be too advanced too early. As a older student, this one felt just right for me.
