Inman, Lyn Hejinian, Myung Mi Kim, and the Language poets; Susan Howe's "Pierce-Arrow," which he submits to semiotic analysis; and the innovations of Craig Dworkin and the conceptualists. Revitalizing what many consider to be a staid rhetorical trope, Golston positions allegory as a creative catalyst behind American poetry's postwar avant-garde achievements.

But perhaps even more important the wording of the text is such that these students will understand what they are trying to convey and to clearly show them how calculus can be used to solve problems in their particular field.

At the beginning of the book, three pages of the Preface, the applications discussed in the text are listed by: Business and Economics, Life Sciences and Ecology, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences. Under these headings are subjects like: Value of a Car, AIDS, Cancer Rates, Abortion Rate and so on. These are subjects that will have some interest and applicability to students rather than the old traditional problems like water flowing into and out of a bucket that used to be the mainstream of teaching calculus.

Finally, calculus marks a transition in the study of mathematics for a student. Up until now he studied arithmetic every year in school, maybe he finally got to a bit of algebra and trig. Now he is exposed to a whole new world of ways to handle problems that go beyond anything he has seen before. This book eases the student into an understanding of how to approach these problems better than any I've seen.

Great Book, Great Price

I took calculus years ago in college and couldn't remember any of it, which is why I bought this book. This book is very easy to understand and is well written. Tons of real world examples, with solutions. If anyone has not yet taken calculus and wants to prepare for a college level calculus coarse, regardless if you are going to take applied or engineering calculus, this book is well worth it. .

This textbook is good, but not great--unless you have an instructor who will interpret the calculus-based applications and problems in the book. Nonetheless, not bad.

quick "How to's ..."

When trying to figure out how to implement something, do you ever wish that the examples you find would just 'cut to the chase'? ... skip the theory & just show me a rough idea of how to go about it?

This book contains 100 hacks/recipes, satisfying the above need. Each is 2- 3 pages, which can (mostly) be run right from their folder (~100 folders in the downloaded code samples, of course). A hack-folderName cross-refernece would have been nice, but, hey ...

They put you on the track in moments - no need to read the whole book for any hack/recipe - just jump right in (to the problem of your day) ... and you can modify/enhance, as your needs dictate.

Code documentation is non-existent and explanation is sparse; but, they do, indeed, satisfy the need for quick examples in 2 - 3 pages!

This book has no illustrations, but what's worse than that is there are no pronunciations, which seems stupid being that these are scientific terms.

Should be on the bookstand of all astronomy buffs

A lot of terms that appear when reading books on astronomy are difficult to understand. I could always get up and head for Google but this is a bit of work. This dictionary is compact and provides definitions and explanations for a very wide range of astronomical topics in a very readable and concise way. I would highly recommend this book to any person who needs to look up the meaning of astronomy terms either frequently or not very often. The descriptions can be understood by the lay person or by more experienced astronomy buffs needing a handy reference by their bedside.
