Church On the Water, Church of the Light: Tadao Ando (Architecture in Detail), by Philip Drew

Tadao Ando is a leading architect of his generation. These two churches demonstrate essential themes in his approach to the design of places of worship. This book presents each of the churches in detail, using Ando's own drawing archive, including his sketchbooks. The Church on the Water occupies a pastoral site and consists in plan of two squares, one large, one small, that overlap and are arranged facing a man-made lake. The smaller of these two squares is a calming preparatory space, enclosed on four sides by milky-white frosted glass, an "enclosure of light", where one can pause before entering the glass walled chapel below. The Church of the Light is built in a quiet residential area of Osaka, and was planned as an annex to the existing church and vicarage. Here Ando explores the spiritual force of the effects of sunlight on simple raw concrete. Slits cut in the form of a cross perforate the chapel's front wall, and when lit by sunlight they manifest what Ando describes as a "cross of light". When presented together these two churches provide a synthesis of opposites, creating spaces that attain a purity and calm through powerful architectonic forms.

The Nerd, by Larry Shue

For a cast of 5 men and 2 women. Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"-so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"-a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence-a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending of the play.

A Good Old Fashioned Knee Slapper
By JMack
I have been a fan of Larry Shue's work since I was in a performance of "The Foreigner". In anticipation of seeing a live performance, I read "The Nerd". My greatest objection is that the title is somewhat misleading. This flaw aside, this may be the funniest play that I have ever read.

Willum Cubbert is one of the most promising architects in Terre Haute, Indiana. He is also a Vietnam veteran that owes his life to a man named Rick Steadman. In the vein of houseguest that wear out their welcome, Steadman may be the most obnoxious. With his over the top tactlessness and inability to take social cues, it takes less than a week for even the man whose life he saved in Vietnam to want Rick gone.

Shue is masterful in his wit and skill for placing jokes in social contexts. The surprise twist at the end makes for an extra delight in reading this play. With his talent, it is remarkable that Shue is not better known.

Revenge on the Nerd
By RCM
Larry Shue is a gifted playwright who can deftly mix laugh-out-loud comedy with social criticism. This was best evidenced in his near-farcical work "The Foreigner". His comedy is put to excellent display in "The Nerd", the story of a man trying to politely get rid of a guest who has more than outstayed his welcome, if he was ever welcome to begin with.

Willum Cubbert, now an architect, was wounded in Vietnam and rescued by Rick Steadman, a man he was never able to meet. But since Rick saved his life, Willum feels indebted to him and offers him a place to stay should he ever need it. On Willum's thirty-fourth birthday, Rick shows up, and turns out to be a nightmare, for he is completely inept when it comes to socializing, and even more so when it comes to being a human being anyone would want to have anything to do with. Willum's life is excessively complicated by Rick's extended visit, and along with his friends they engage in some wild antics to make Rick leave for good.

"The Nerd" is fast paced and often laugh-out-loud funny. Larry Shue mangages to imbue his characters with vivid life despite the shortness of his works. What makes "The Nerd" work is the conundrum that Willum finds himself in by feeling indebted to and horrified by Rick at the same time, a situation that anyone could recognize themselves in. "The Nerd" is a comic masterpiece which I am looking forward to seeing performed live.

A literary and performance masterpiece!
By B. Beaudry
This is easilly my favorite play ever. Last year, I directed it for a Student Directed Production at my high school and had a lot of success and strong audience response. I had people walk up to me hoping for more performances because they had laughed SO HARD. Some of my closest friends actually said they had fallen off their seats laughing. Involving a small cast of 7, this production creates what reviewers say is "one of the funniest plays ever written". The plot begins with architect Willum Cubbert getting a surprise birthday party from his girlfriend Tansy and his room mate and play-critic, Axel. From the beginning, the characters are establishes, but the plot takes a little while to catch onto. Tansy talks about leaving Willum for a job opportunity in Washington because she feels like she's spinning her tires with Willum. Finally, Willum's boss, Waldgrave, his wife, Clelia, and son, Thor, arrive. From this family's entrance, they're a comedy routine on their own! Waldgrave is edgy and very high strung, while Clelia presents herself as a very calm and collected special ed. teacher...while their son, Thor, is a hellian! :) After a while, a man who once saved Willum's life in Vietnam, shows up on the answering machine. And this man, named Rick Steadman, shows up, and is a bumbling oaf and a complete NERD! All in all, Rick drives EVERYONE nuts! Clelia smashes dishes to relieve stress, Waldgrave screams and pitches a fit, and Thor locks himself in the bedroom. After a LOT of comedic setups, the Waldgrave family exits with muddy clothes, soaked shoes, and a psychologically messed up delinquent. Willum, Tansy, and Axel result in constantly being driven up the wall by Rick. So, Rick decides to stay...permanantly. Willum doesn't feel as if he could just tell Rick to leave, so he stays and DRIVES HIM UP THE WALL! After dedicated attempts at ridding themselves of Rick, they decide the only way it's possible, is by performing bizarre Pagan rituals. After dancing around the room, Willum, Tansy, and Axel all realize that Rick is ENJOYING himself! Finally, Rick joins the chant and shouts for them to throw cottage cheese out the window. They do. And Waldgrave reenters the apartment with a pile of cottage cheese covering him. In the end, Willum is fired completely because of Rick. And that is when Willum decides to tell the schmuck to leave. And in a very awkward way, the nerd makes his exit. And Willum, now jobless, decides to take a job offer in Washington, so he can remain with Tansy. A love setup was caused by a secret plan by Axel and the actor who had played Rick Steadman the entire time. Willum may go to Washington realizing that he's now jobless, but as "Rick" says "by that time, I'm sure he'll be so happy he'll forget to be mad" and the curtain closes. There is no perfect way to review this, due to all the humour within the dialogue. I simply will say, BUY THIS! YOU WILL READ IT, and if you're a theater lover, you'll read it again and again! It's the best! All around, it isn't incredibly deep in meaning, but involves a very simple and cute love story.

Review
"An engrossing and thrilling story, written with all the insight you would expect from these authors. Complemented by full colour photos of our galaxy and many pages of scientific facts, this is a really good read." Parents In Touch "World famous scientist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy have created a third amazing adventure cleverly blended with real science...The latest theories of time travel and the Big Bang are all included in this great adventure which is brought vividly to life in the full colour photos of real images from space." -- Julia Eccleshare Love Reading 4 Kids "This gripping adventure sets your mind racing from the very first page. Add to that the equally as fascinating scientific facts provided by Stephen Hawking and what you have is a really great book to read." Scribbler Magazine "For any children 9 years and over who are interested in science and space, this book would be a fantastic read...Great for those children who want a book to read that really makes them think. Although the science can be a bit complicated for children, the book also contains a series of brilliant factual sections... There are also several very interesting, child-friendly essays on the latest scientific theories, written by scientists such as Dr Stephen Hawking. Finally, as is all that wasn't enough, there are also lots of beautiful colour picture sections full of amazing photos of Earth, galaxies and our Solar System. This is a really good book, perfect for older children, with a good mix of fiction and non-fiction. Children will learn a great deal from the factual sections as well as enjoying a really exciting story. I would highly recommend it...Hopefully it will inspire the next generation of scientists." The School Run "Taken for its story alone, these tales are rich enough to appeal to children of nearly all ages (and that's not a small claim), but there's more. As you might expect from a father and daughter team with the name of Hawking, there are some super powerful physics lessons embedded into both the plot, and as added nonfiction "further" information through the story. It's written at a perfect pitch for children - neither too complex to understand, nor too "dumbed down" to excite. Throughout each of the books, there's a palpable underlying sense of wonder in the point of discovery we're now at with physics, and children (adults too) will certainly feel that...A book like this could spark a love of science that might last a lifetime, but even at its simplest level, it's a great story... Either way, it's a fun filled ride full of drama, action, and above all, discovery." Blog Critics

Chapter One

Where’s the best place in the Universe for a pig to live? Annie was typing onto the keyboard of Cosmos, the supercomputer. “Cosmos will know!” she declared. “He must be able to find Freddy somewhere better than that shabby old farm.”

The farm where Freddy, the pig, now lived was actually perfectly nice—at least, all the other animals seemed happy there. Only Freddy, George’s precious pig, was miserable.

“I feel awful,” said George sadly as Cosmos, the world’s greatest supercomputer, ran through his millions and billions of files to try to answer Annie’s question about pigs. “Freddy was so angry he wouldn’t even look at me.”

“He looked at me!” said Annie hotly, glaring at the screen. “I definitely saw him send me a message with his piggy eyes. It was: HELP! GET ME OUT OF HERE!”

The day trip to visit Freddy at the farm just outside Foxbridge, the university town where George and Annie lived, had not been a success. When Annie’s mom, Susan, arrived to pick them up at the end of the afternoon, she was surprised to see George red-faced and furious and Annie on the verge of tears.

“George! Annie!” said Susan. “What is the matter with the two of you?”

“It’s Freddy!” burst out Annie, leaping into the backseat of the car. “He hates it at the farm.”

Freddy was George’s pet pig. He had been a Christmas present from George’s gran when he was a piglet. George’s parents were eco-activists, which also meant they weren’t very interested in presents. They didn’t like the way all the discarded, broken, and unwanted toys left over from Christmas built up into huge mounds of old plastic and metal, floating across the seas, choking whales and strangling seagulls, or making mountains of ugly junk on the land.

George’s gran knew that if she gave George an ordinary present, his parents would give it right back, and everyone would get upset. So if he was to keep his Christmas present, she realized she would have to think of something special—something that helped the planet rather than destroyed it.

That’s why, one cold Christmas Eve, George found a cardboard box on the doorstep. Inside it was a little pink piglet and a note from Gran saying: Can you give this young pig a nice home? George had been thrilled. He had a Christmas present his parents had to let him keep; and, even better, he had his very own pig.

The problem with little pink piglets, however, is that they get bigger. Bigger and bigger, until they are enormous—too large for the backyard of an ordinary row house with a narrow strip of land and scattered vegetables growing between the two fences separating it from the neighboring yards. But George’s parents had kind hearts really, so Freddy, as George named the pig, had continued living in his pigsty in the backyard until he reached a gigantic size—he was now more like a baby elephant than a pig. George didn’t care how big Freddy got—he was very fond of his pig and spent long hours in the yard, chatting to him or just sitting in his huge shadow, reading books about the wonders of the cosmos.

But George’s dad, Terence, had never really liked Freddy. Freddy was too big, too piggy, too pink, and he enjoyed dancing on Terence’s carefully arranged vegetable plot, trampling his spinach and broccoli and munching thoughtlessly on his carrot tops. Last summer, before the twins were born, the whole family had been going away. Terence had been super-quick to find Freddy a place at a nearby children’s petting farm, promising George that when they all got back, the pig would be able to come home.

Only this never happened. George and his parents returned from their adventures, and George’s next-door neighbors—the scientist Eric, his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Annie—came back from living in America. Then George’s mother had twin baby girls, Juno and Hera, who cried and gurgled and smiled. And then cried some more. And every time one of them stopped crying, there would be a beautiful half-second of silence. Then the other baby would start up, wailing until George thought his brain would explode and start leaking out of his ears. His mom and dad always looked stressed and tired, and George felt bad about asking them for anything at all. So once Annie came back from America, he started slipping through the hole in the back fence more and more often, until he was practically living with his friend, her crazy family, and the world’s greatest supercomputer in the house next door.

But it was worse for Freddy, because he never made it home at all.

Once the baby girls were born, George’s dad said they had enough on their hands without a great big pig taking up most of the backyard. “Anyway,” he told George rather pompously when he protested, “Freddy is a creature of planet Earth. He doesn’t belong to you—he belongs to nature.”

But Freddy couldn’t even stay in his small, friendly petting farm, which had to close at the beginning of this summer vacation. Freddy—along with the other animals there—had been moved to a bigger place where there were unusual breeds of farm animal, and lots of visitors, especially during summer vacation. It was a bit like him and Annie moving up to middle school, George thought to himself—going somewhere much bigger. It was a bit scary.

“Nature, huh!” he snorted to himself as he remembered his dad’s comments now. Cosmos the computer was still chewing over the complicated question of the best location in the Universe for a homeless pig. “I don’t think Freddy knows he’s a creature of planet Earth—he just wants to be with us,” said George.

“He looked so sad!” said Annie. “I’m sure he was crying.”

On their trip to the farm earlier that day, George and Annie had come across Freddy lying flat on his stomach on the floor of his pig pen, legs splayed out on either side, his eyes dull and his cheeks sunken. The other pigs were trotting around, looking cheerful and healthy. The pen was spacious and airy, the farm clean, and the people that worked there friendly. But even so, Freddy seemed lost in a piggy hell of his own. George felt incredibly guilty. Summer vacation had passed and he hadn’t done anything about getting Freddy home again. It was Annie who had suggested making the trip to the farm today, badgering her mom into driving them there and picking them up again afterward.

George and Annie had asked the workers what was wrong with Freddy. They’d looked worried too. The vet had examined him: Freddy wasn’t sick, she’d said; he just seemed very unhappy, as though he was pining away. After all, he had grown up in George’s quiet backyard, and had then moved to a small farm with just a few children coming to pet him. In the new place he was surrounded by noisy, unfamiliar animals and had lots of visitors every day: It was probably a big shock. Freddy had never lived with his fellow pigs before. He was totally unused to other animals: In fact, he considered himself more as a person than a pig. He didn’t understand what he was doing on a farm where visitors hung over the edge of the pig pen to stare at him.

“Can’t we take him home?” George had asked.

The helpers looked a little perplexed. There were lots of rules and regulations about moving animals around, and anyway, they felt that Freddy was simply too big now to live in an urban backyard. “He’ll feel better soon!” they reassured George. “Just you wait and see—next time you come to visit, it’ll be quite different.”

“But he’s been here for weeks already,” protested George.

The helpers either didn’t hear or chose to ignore him.

Annie, however, had other ideas. As soon as they got back to her house, she started making plans. “We can’t bring Freddy back to your place,” she said, switching on Cosmos, “because your dad will just take him straight back to the farm. And he can’t live here with us.”

Unfortunately George knew this was true. He looked around Eric’s study: Cosmos was perched on the desk, on top of piles and piles of scientific papers, surrounded by wobbling towers of books, cups of half-drunk tea, and scraps of paper with important equations scrawled on them. Annie’s dad used the supercomputer to work on his theories about the origins of the Universe. Finding a home for a pig was, it seemed, almost as difficult.

When Annie and her family had first moved into this house, George’s pig had made a dramatic entrance, charging through Eric’s study, sending books flying into the air. Eric had been quite pleased, because in all the chaos Freddy had actually helped him to find a book he’d been searching for. But these days, George and Annie both knew that Eric wouldn’t welcome a spare pig. He had too much work to do to look after a pig.

“We need to find somewhere nice for Freddy,” said Annie firmly.

Ping! Cosmos’s screen came to life again and started flashing with different colored lights—a sure sign that the great computer was pleased with himself. “I have prepared for you a summary of the conditions within our local cosmic area and their suitability for porcine life,” he said. “Please click on each box to see a readout of your pig’s existence on each planet within our Solar System. I have taken the liberty of providing”—the computer chortled to himself—“an illustration for each planet with my own comments.”

“Wowzers!” said Annie. “Cosmos, you are the best.”

On Cosmos’s screen were eight little boxes, each marked with the name of a planet in the Solar System. She checked the one labeled MERCURY . . .

OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

The Solar System is the name we give to the family of planets that orbit our star, the Sun.

Our Solar
System was
formed around
4.6 billion
years ago

How Our Solar System Was Created

Step One:

A cloud of gas and dust begins to collapse—possibly triggered by shock waves from a nearby supernova.

Step Two:

A ball of dust formed, spinning round and flattening into a disk as it attracted more dust, gradually growing larger and spinning faster.

Step Three:

The central region of this collapsed cloud got hotter and hotter until it started to burn, turning it into a star.

Stars with a mass
like our Sun
take around ten
million years
to form.

Step Four:

As the star burned, the dust in the disk around it slowly stuck together to form clusters, which became rocks, which eventually formed planets, all still orbiting the star—our Sun—at the center. These planets ended up forming two main groups: close to the Sun, where it is hot, the rocky planets; farther out, beyond Mars, the gas planets, which consist of a thick atmosphere of gas surrounding a liquid inner region with, very probably, a solid core.

Because Jupiter
is the largest, it
may have done
most of the
cleaning up
itself.

Step Five:

The planets cleaned up their orbits by gobbling up any chunks of material they came across.

Step Six:

Hundreds of millions of years later, the planets settled into stable orbits—the same orbits that they follow today. The bits of stuff left over ended up either in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, or much farther out beyond Pluto in the Kuiper belt.

Are There Other Solar Systems Like Ours?

An
exoplanet
is a planet in
orbit around a
star other than
the Earth’s
Sun.

For several hundred years astronomers suspected that other stars in the Universe might have planets in orbit around them. However, the first exoplanet was not confirmed until 1992, orbiting the corpse of a massive star. The first planet around a real, brightly shining star was discovered in 1995. Since then, more than four hundred exoplanets have been discovered—some around stars very similar to our Sun!

This is just the beginning. Even if only 10% of the stars in our Galaxy had planets in orbit around them, that would still mean more than two hundred billion solar systems within the Milky Way alone.

Some of these may be similar to our Solar System. Others might look very different. Planets in a binary solar system, for example, might see two suns rise and set in the sky. Knowing the distance from their star to the planets—and the size and age of the star—helps us to calculate how likely it is that we might find life on those planets.

Most of the exoplanets we know about in other solar systems are huge—as big as Jupiter or larger—mainly because those are easier to detect than smaller planets. But astronomers are beginning to discover smaller, rocky planets orbiting at the right distance from their star that might be more like planet Earth.

In early 2011, NASA confirmed their Kepler mission had spotted an Earth-like planet around a star five hundred light-years away! At only 1.4 times the size of our home planet, this new planet, Kepler 10-b, may be the most similar to Earth we have found so far.

You won't want to put it down but let the kids read it first!
By Matthew J. Taylor
This book is one of a series by the Hawkings. While directed at youth and perfect for engaging that demographic, don't be misled. If as an adult you've always secretly been curious about the great scientific ideas but stymied by conventional texts, this series is for you as well. The fun adventure tale creates a context and problem so non-scientists can see the need for a solution. The authors then provide these solutions in clear explanations of principles as they apply to the plot line. THEN it makes sense vs just abstract descriptions. So join Annie and George as they explore the Big Bang and light up your and your child's imagination!

I would recomend all 3 books in this series.
By DMD
I have read many of Stephen Hawking's books. They are great books, but I do not have a scientific mind, so I decided to read his books that target a younger audience. I was not disappointed. They are meant to entertain and teach at the same time. This is accomplished.
Included in this book: facts about the universe, full-color space photos, and essays on scientific topics on the latest theories from some of the top scientist. This book is full of facts such as The Big Bang, Space, Time, Relativity, Large Hadron Collider, Singularities, Solar System and many more.
You need to know as an adult reading this book that it is meant for a young audience so be prepared for a plot that is about a supercomputer that allows time travel, the characters are young children (parents are eco-activists and scientists), bad guys and good guys etc. I highly recommend the series of 3 books, they are great.

Great third entry into the George series
By Geeky Teacher Parent
This was another favorite read aloud for my fifth grade students and my own children, ages 5 and 8. Hopefully there are more books to come in the series as some things are left unresolved in the plot.

In this book, George and his friend Annie are starting middle school. Annie's father Eric, a scientist, has just been named to a math professorship at Foxbridge University (Cambridge's doppleganger in this fictional world). He has also been put in charge of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. How one scientist is supposed to be in charge of Mars rovers, the LHC, the Cambridge math department, and the guardian of the world's most powerful computer (quantum no less) searching for life around the universe, I have no idea, but it's fiction and he must be some sort of superhuman scientist. Anyway, the children readers don't pick up on this.

In this book, Eric's old professor, the original creator of Cosmos along with Graham Reeper and Eric, makes his appearance. He is upset that Eric has used Cosmos to go to the moon and gets photographed by a satellite. He demands Eric be examined by the Order of Science in order to determine if he is a worthy guardian of Cosmos. A secretive group of anti-scientists makes its appearance. They are out to convince the world that the LHC experiments are dangerous. They have various reasons for not wanting the experiments to succeed which are revealed eventually in the book. Without giving anything away, I'll say I found their reasons rather far fetched. Frankly the LHC just isn't going to accomplish much of anything that they seemed worried about. The Hawkings really kind of overdo things here. But I guess they just wanted to impress children with how great the LHC is.

Annie becomes infatuated with an older boy at her school, Vincent, who is a skateboarding karate kid. This makes George jealous, although the book kind of tip toes around the whole issue and never really resolves it. From an adult's perspective I found this whole crush thing rather odd more than anything. It sort of comes out of nowhere in the series and will hopefully be ended in the next book if the Hawkings write one. To go from George being her best friend for years to suddenly swooning over a new never before seen character George had never heard of before just seemed too big a leap the way they did it. That situation needed far more story development to make it believable. Once again, though, the children hearing the book read to them went right along with this plot development without thinking anything was amiss. The point of Vincent seems to be to provide the lesson to readers that stereotypical athletic cool kids can also be into science, sort of like Emmett 's character in the second book was there to show that stereotypical computer geeks are cool people too. Meh. That part of the book doesn't impress me.

However, the science in this book is once again stellar. This book dips into quantum mechanics and the big bang. My students particularly liked the cat Schrody once I explained to them what the Schrodinger cat thought experiment was all about. They talked about that cat for the rest of the school year. As with the rest of the books there are various science essays spread throughout the book which sometimes are understandable to the elementary school aged audience and other times are not. The book also has full color pictures again including some of the LHC. Students will learn loads of science from this book just like the first two.

The story holds children's attention very well and usually has them begging for me to read "just a little more." So even though as an adult the plot holes are kind of glaring at times to me, I appreciate the fact that children love the story. I'm more than willing to put up with odd plot choices for the sake of the great science content. The series does a fantastic job at making scientists into heroes for children. I don't know of any other fictions books that do it quite as well. So for that I give it 5 stars.

High Quality, Beautifully Illustrated Book and 5-stars to Seller
By Debbie L
I ordered this book for my father-in-law as a birthday gift. The book arrived much sooner than expected (which was great for me since I'm a bit of a procrastinator and usually end up sending "belated" Bday gifts). The seller (Titanic Treasures) included a handwritten note with contact info in case, for any reason, I wasn't completely happy with my purchase. I appreciate that, but won't be needing it because the book was exactly as described: "Gift Quality... Pristine Dust Jacket Protected..." It was absolutely beautiful!! (I don't think I've ever been so excited about a book purchase)! I was proud to gift this book and will definitely do business with this seller again if a future opportunity presents itself.

Perfect addition to my home
By Jasmin M.
This is a great coffee table book, we display it in our home as a table peace, but we also love to look through it as we are photographers ourselves. This is a great conversation starter but also simply something nice to have in our home as decor.

Fun even for nonphotographers!
By Steven Peterson
Let me confess. . . . I am not a photographer. I will occasionally use someone else's camera to take a picture on their behalf. But I don't do many shots on my own for myself. I actually bought this book for someone else in the family, but could not resist picking it up and taking a look, since I do enjoy this series (Eyewitness Companions). And, boy, did I enjoy taking a peek inside this volume.

The book begins by noting that, literally, photography means "writing with light," a rather apropos term, given what a picture can say. Tom Ang's introduction goes on to note that (Page 12): To contemplate the true extent of [photography's] social reach and cultural impact is awe-inspiring."

The first substantive part of the book is probably my favorite--mainly because it focuses on great photographers rather than more "technical" issues. Here, we are introduced to Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus (The picture is not included here, but take a look in one of her collections with that famous picture of Ozzie and Harriet! It's unbelievable), Andre Kertesz, Annie Leibovitz (all those photos of hers focusing on rock and roll!), Alfred Stieglitz, and so on. And Margaret Bourke-White sitting on the Chrysler Building taking a photo still takes my breath away! Very brief consideration of each, but for a nonexpert, it's enjoyable to get a sense of the person and an example or two of their art. There follows a history of photography, from camera obscura to digital technology, which I also find fascinating.

Then, on to more technical issues. Real pros will not find this terribly useful, but for amateurs and "wanna-bes," this would probably prove helpful. Among issues discussed: tools of photography, working with digital images, the elements of photography, taking successful photos, and so on.

Again, for the person who wants a general introduction to photography, to place photography in context, this is a good start.
