About the Author

KAKUKO SHOJI has been an instructor of Japanese at the University of Hawaii since 1968, and is the author of Basic Connections and Japanese Core Words and Phrases (both published by Kodansha International). Shoji was also the supervising editor of Kodansha's Effective Japanese Usage Guide.

Good but not enough.

This is a pretty good book for the most part. It gives lots of words for different situations and shows their common connections. I just wish there was more example sentences as well as an index for what pages the words are on. The words are still easy to find given the situations of Home, Daily life, People, School & Work, Travel and Entertainment in the contents. Overall I would recommend this book to any one who can read hiragana and katakana the formatting is much nicer than the authors other titles and you can just flip through any section when your board since there is no structure to follow.

Book is very helpful in displaying the information needed on how common phrases should be worded in Japanese. The sections are well thought out. I use this as a reference many times through studying and to help translate.

Very Useful for serious learners.

This book is geared towards more serious learners and not for someone whose just wanting to learn something for a short trip to japan, so if you're interested in only learning something minor or not continuing your studies, then this book is not for you. That being said, it's a extremely useful book for hardcore learners of the Japanese language. This book is more of a reference book but it gives detailed explanations on how exactly a word should be said so you know how and when to use it. It'll definitely make you sound and feel more natural in the Japanese language.

This book does not have a index but the well organized table of context does make up as a good substitute. Also, there is no romanji (which is good thing), so you do need to know hiragana and katakana before picking up this book. This book does use furigana so you don't have to know the kanji right off. I would suggest this book for upper-beginner to intermediate learners. One neat feature is that there is a Appendix at the end of the book that visually shows you correct and incorrect collocations (word pairings).

I already love this book and can see me using it for a long time to come.

Slightly dated translation of an excellent work

"The Twelve Caesars" is normally a book I would recommend as an introduction to the classics, with its (usually) forthright and arch pen portraits of Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. As a whole it makes lively and entertaining reading, even if the last part of each chapter devoted to scholarly and literary achievements of each Emperors reign (obviously pretty short in the cases of Galba, Otho and Vitellus) is a bit sedate after the preceding intrigue, scandal and gore. The occasionally archaic language and crowded layout of this translation make this slightly less accessible than a more contemporary translation such as The Twelve Caesars (Penguin Classics) (even if some of the references to "strumpets" and "unnatural pollution" are pretty amusing in their own right), although you do get some material not normally included in the later editions.

Independent of price, a modern translation and reader-friendly typeface and layout would be worth an extra star, but this edition is still quite serviceable (not to mention free).

Combining Native American history, personal confession and social critique in a clear, conversational style, Ortiz tends to avoid metaphor and elaborate language or fixed poetic structures. The first of five sections centers on time spent in diverse institutions: the academy, writers' colonies, various academic conferences, jail and detox centers. In "Headlands Journal," an essay that mixes poetry and prose, Ortiz begins with a meditation on Native populations in prison, moves to tell a story about three visiting Chinese artists and then by the end of the essay addresses his anger when someone calls the Acoma Pueblo language "foreign." The series "What Indians?," written for the Venice Biennale, addresses with humor and anger the control that the dominant culture has over Native American self-representation: "Real or unreal. Real and or unreal. They were made up. It didn't matter." Those who turn to Ortiz's work for its mixture of insightful, no-nonsense political analysis and poetry rooted in Acoma culture will be more interested in the last three sections of the book. There are numerous poems about the importance of the land and of the continuing struggle to regain the land, such as "Telling and Showing Her" and "Acoma Poems," printed in both the Acoma Pueblo language and English. If, as in poems like "Beauty All Around: A Moment on the Lakota Prairie," Ortiz moves too easily from the sunset ("beauty all around me") to a series of questions about cultural appropriation, this book still asks crucial questions as much as it argues for beauty. Secret Pleasures

The "stars" of American Indian literature--James Welch, Leslie Silko, Scott Momaday--are only the beautiful surface of the genre. Dive deeper, and you will find treasures like Peter Blue Cloud, Ray Young Bear, Anita Endrezze, and the incomparable Simon J. Ortiz.
Ortiz writes with a brilliance and clarity all Americans could aspire to, and this little collection of pieces, modulating from the grim depths of alcoholism and prison to the open spaces filled with joyful children, is representative of his work. His meditation on a sparrow's nest is worth the cover charge, discussion of the place of English in the mind of the Indian artist ("Beauty All Around") is a model of deeply felt exposition, and the cycle of poems on whether Indians exist is both witty and tragic.
Taste the best, a literary flavor perhaps too exotic for the general reader, but worth the adventure. This is a writer to remember and return to.

Simon Ortiz remains one of the most well-known American Indian (Acoma Pueblo) poets living today. He began writing during the American Indian Literary Renaissance and is quite prolific. His poetry weaves real-life events, oral stories, history, and Pueblo culture together, creating experiences that allow both Native and non-Native readers insights into Ortiz's world.

Out There Somewhere is divided into six parts. Part I (Margins) contains numerous politically driven statements that discuss colonization and post-colonization effects on Native peoples. Many of the poems are also written as if they are journal entries, and several reveal personal past experiences that Ortiz himself faced. This includes instances where individuals call the Pueblo language "foreign"--which of course it cannot be, as it is a language that is Indigenous to the North Americas and is not "foreign."

Part II (Images) deals with self-identity issues. I believe that one of the strongest poems in the entire book--"What Indians?"--is found in this section. This poem discusses the way in which colonized peoples are often forced into a certain identity by those that have colonized them. The poem states:

Like other colonized Indigenous peoples, cultures, and communities throughout the world, Native Americans have experienced and endured identities imposed upon them by colonial powers, most of which originated in Europe. This imposition as resulted to a great extent--more than we admit and realize--in the loss of a sense of a centered human self and the weakening and loss of Indigenous cultural identity.

Part III (Gifts) delves into small daily gifts that people have in their lives. This includes family for many. For Ortiz, he also counts a special garden that he and his family tend. Part IV (Horizons) includes several key poems that discuss knowledge, especially Pueblo language, and how it can be used. I find it quite significant to see Indigenous authors writing in their own language; this section is beautifully written. Part V (Ever) includes several pieces that deal with ceremonies and Part VI (Connections After All) has some wonderful poems that are to be read more like songs.

Overall, all of these poems leave an impression on the reader. Ortiz masterfully uses different types of poems to relay information to the reader, sharing with us what it means to be Acoma Pueblo, Native, American, and a human. The imagery is fascinating and poems like "What Indians?" will leave you reflecting. Highly recommended!

This book is a great read, with many illuminating discussions from two solid scholars. Very good for figuring out what the field of Anglo-Saxon studies was like a few decades back. Lapidge's chapter is especially valuable and enduring.

but quickly turns in to a self-reflection on how great Giuliani thinks he is as a leader

I bought this book for a class - it was part of the reading list. The book starts off decently with valuable lessons about leadership, but quickly turns in to a self-reflection on how great Giuliani thinks he is as a leader. In light of recent events and demonstrations of character/leadership, I cannot in good conscience give this book higher than one star. Even if you're a big fan of him personally, the writing just isn't there.

Forget about politics. Forget about extreme Muslims. Forgot about Republican or Democrat. Forget about Giuliani's personal life. Just forget about it.

This book is about the defining moments of 9/11 and the leadership it needed in order not to descend into chaos. This man has put his heart and soul into this event and showed great leadership you can learn from.

The writings in 'Leadership' give you great insight into the situation of the event and dealings of the mayor. Courage as well as leadership prevail in keeping the objective of his mission close. Information is critical when chaos is lurking around the corner. Sleep can be denied.

Being European I'm not biassed in my judgement of the person or politician Giuliani. When you read this book about mayor Giuliani there's a lot you can learn from.

Interesting book....slow read.

I agree with one of the previous reviewers that this WAS a slow read, but it was a read that I learned a lot from. Giuliani is a brilliant man and leader, and his views on leadership, politics, and being a good human being were something that I hope to benefit from.
It was extrememly interesting to read his blow by blow accounts of what happened on September 11. He handled the entire situation with the utmost professionalism and perfect grace.
Where the book gets slow is in other areas talking about certain events that have happened throughout his career as an attorney, and as an aspiring politician. Though important to the premise of the book, they get a little long winded which is why this book took me a while to read.
All in all, a good book for anyone interested in Giuliani the man, as well as learning good leadership and success skills.

Where are you tonight, Sweet Marie?

This was the first serious modern work on alchemy that I've read, and boy did I luck out! It is a work charged with authenticity and vision. von Franz gives you some historical background on the origins of alchemy, then introduces this 16th century alchemist, Gerhard Dorn, and his inner and outer struggle to illuminate and heal the schism between spiritual alchemy and Western Christianity. Dorn doesn't come to any happy conclusions, but the chapter on Medieval Magic is worth the entire read. It includes a serious attempt to examine the question of evil (oh thank you!)and the historical process of projecting the contents of the psyche onto some aspect of the body. Also an inspiring section on the "cloud" as symbol in alchemy and christian mysticism for the confusing and darkening part of a person's journey inward to her own core. Also, peppered throughout are juicy tidbits about things like necromancy, pyromancy, hydromancy and something Jung himself was into for a while called Geomancy--which she explains in a brief but fascinating aside. The book is developed from transcripts of a 1969 lecture she gave in Zurich at the Jung Institute. It reads like a lecture, with the rythmns and addendums of the spoken word mostly intact, but obviously translated. That's ok--it flows like pure gold and is a great window into this whole Zurich scene and the living body of work that von Franz and Jung together embodied. This little work is bound to inspire and fuel some aspect of your own imagination. Enjoy!

Brilliant commentary with tons of psychological insights

Derived from Jan/Feb 1969 lectures @ C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, this commentary on Gerhard Dorn's 17th c. work complements Jung's "Mysterium Coniunctionis" & "Psychology & Alchemy." It's an advanced book--prior background in Jungian psychology & alchemy are helpful, but p. 21: "One book opens another. Read many books & compare them throughout & then you get the meaning," & this work helps one understand Jung's lengthier/more difficult works. Indeed, despite the erudite material, von Franz clarifies the meaning in her awesome commentary. Per her title, pp. 22-3: "Jung sometimes defined the introverted psychological tradition in alchemy as the art of active imagination with material." Further, p. 147: "Dorn floated over the abysses of the mysteries that Jung was to penetrate." [later]

Much of Dorn's work is a symbolic, alchemical journey similar to the Kabbalistic Hekalot, the Divine Comedy, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, or especially Ashcroft-Nowicki's "The Shining Path." His travelers (spiritus, anima & body) resemble the Neshamah, Ruach, & Nefesh in Kabbalah. Dorn reveals brilliant insights into psychology but fails in his attempt to reconcile Christian dogma with alchemy. pp. 12-13: "The ultimate dynamic impulse to become a physicist is based upon the desire to find out more about how God works...The really great & creative scientists have the same motivation as the alchemists: to find out more about that spiritual or divine substance...which lies behind all existence."

But, von Franz's also provides enlightening/profound/pithy asides on: dreams, flow ("a constant awareness of the Self"), evil & the shadow, animal & human rituals/games, the Unconscious creating conflict to achieve progress (implying the spiral development model), the psychological basis for divination techniques, & the relationship between individuation & synchronicity. pp. 148-9: "While we normally live in a dual world of `outer' & `inner' events, in a synchronistic event this duality no longer exists; outer events behave as if they were a part of our psyche, so that everything is contained in the same wholeness...To reach that point where outer & inner reality become one is the goal of individuation. Through it one also reaches some of what Jung calls the `absolute knowledge' in the unconscious...At the end point of development (the end stage of the individuation process) the Zen masters are in such a state of harmony with the collective unconscious that they communicate with one another subliminally, they are together in the unus mundus". [Self] This is a brilliant work, my favorite of the 5 I've read.

About the Author
Dr. Sokyo Ono was a professor at Kokugakuin Daigaku, a Shinto university in Tokyo, and has lectured for the National Association of Shinto Shrines. He also served as Executive Director of the International Institute for the Study of Religions and the Japan Religious Cooperative Council

William Woodard directed the research unit of the Religious and Cultural Resources Division, Civil Information and Education Section, SCAP from 1946 to 1952.

It has its flaws, but its well worth a read

This is perhaps the best known (and most widely available)introductory treatise of the Shinto religion. While Ono's The Kami Way certainly deserves its notoriety, those who wish a deeper philosophical coverage of this poorly understood religion will be a bit disappointed, for Dr. Ono really just scratches the surface and seldom goes beyond the topics of shrine architecture, ceremonial trappings, and local and national shrine administration. The mythology/cosmology of Shinto is briefly addressed, and I believe that the average western reader will find the nature of Shinto even more perplexing after reading this book for that very reason: Ono calls Shinto "a religion without theology", but no religion is without theology, regardless of how ancient it is (for example, I would have found a few examples of instances of local nature spirits being transformed into Buddhist saints most informative). For those totally unfamiliar with Shinto, I will make this rough comparison: imagin if the ancient European pagan religions had survived the Christian domination of the late Middle Ages and continued to exist in organized forms, occasionally incorporating Christian concepts into their own respective worldviews and religious ceremonies (as Shinto did to a limited extent with the imported Buddhist religion). Despite its scant coverage of actual religious matters, The Kami Way lucidly describes the mundane matters of this faith's temporal administration (and provides much coverage of shrine conditions and inter-provincial/national relations, with an emphasis on comparison between standards before and after World War Two). I highly reccommend this book as an introduction for the curious.

An introduction to the un-religion

Originally published in 1960 as "Bulletin #8" from the government-sponsored International Institute for the Study of Religions, "Shinto: The Kami Way" was written to serve as an English-language introduction to Japan's native religion. While somewhat dated in use of language and pictures, the fact that the book is still in print more than fifty years later says that author Ono Sokyo did a good job of it.

And Ono did do a good job. He stayed mostly on the surface, discussed the establishment of shrines, who pays for them and what their role is, who the priests are and what their role is, what are some of the important shrines and architectural style. He writes about the significance of certain objects like the shimenawa rope you see at many shrines, or the costumes of the priests and shrine maidens. He sheds some light on some of the rituals, on the history of Shinto through WWII and after, and the role of Shinto in the home and in the community. This is very much a "nuts and bolts" guide to the world of Shinto.

For the rest, for the nature of kami and the beliefs of Shinto, he simply says:

"It is impossible to make explicit and clear what that which fundamentally by its very nature is vague."

This is the aspect that many Westerners find so mystifying about Shinto. It falls too far outside what they think of as "religion." There are no prophets or holy men, no bible or salvation, no afterlife, no forbidden fruits, no code of moral conduct. Shinto is a life-affirming religion, and all things associated with life; sex, pain, indulgence, lust, joy, abandon; are good. Getting completely drunk and stuffing yourself like a pig on expensive treats is one of the most holy ways to honor the spirits. There is no concept of sin; the most one can be is dirty (the kami like things clean).

Shinto is also not so much a system of beliefs as an organization of rituals and traditions. Even reading some of the reviews for this book, it is clear how difficult a concept this is for people to grasp. One reviewer wanted to see a gallery of images of kami, even though Ono makes it explicit that kami have no form and are never depicted in art. Another reviewer insists that there MUST be a doctrine and theology for Shinto, and somehow Ono didn't include it in his book. But Ono is right. No such thing exists.

In truth, as Ono writes, Shinto is more of a collection of rituals, traditions and superstitions bound up in a very loose belief system. One cannot say "I am Shinto" in the way you would say "I am Buddhist" or "I am Catholic." That would be like saying "I am Christmas" because you put up a tree every year. In fact, most Japanese people have never even heard the word Shinto, and if you told them they were being religious just because they had a shrine at home and participated in the local festivals, they would just laugh at you. These activities are just part of daily life, part of being Japanese. And that is Shinto.

Because Shinto is something you do, not something you think about. Ono puts this succinctly in saying "Shinto is caught, and not taught" and "the strength of Shinto is in its emphasis on sensory experience derived from mystic rites and natural phenomenon rather than on theological discourse."

With this I could not agree with Ono more. As part of my Master's Degree, I have read many books and wrote many papers on Shinto, and no amount of study can really tell you what Shinto is. I would say that I have a strong understanding of the native religion of Japan, but this was gained through experience, through shouldering the heavy mikoshi as we took the local kami on a tour through the town, or burning under giant flaming torches in order to please a local fire kami, or suffering through the ordeal that is the Naked Man Festival from which not everyone comes out alive.

A book like Ono's is never going to be able to truly show you what Shinto is, any more than a book on sushi could really tell you what uni tastes like. They can talk about the history, the cultivation, the preparation, but when it comes to flavor you are really just going to have to try it for yourself.

Dick Hardy is a Pastoral Leadership Consultant, serving churches across the country. A former Administrative Pastor and Chief Operating Officer to two mega-churches and a Bible College Vice President, he brings thirty plus years of experience to the table in helping pastors navigate growth issues. He is the author of previous publications 27 Tough Questions Pastors Ask and the video series Make It Happen. He is active in service and hospitality at his local church. He is also married to The Lovely Redhead. Together, they are the proud parents of two married children and two grandchildren.

Practical, How-to Advice for Pastoral Leaders

Dick Hardy is a personal friend and a pastoral leadership consultant. He has the gift of distilling ministry advice down to its practical essence, a gift that is on full display in Right Turns, his second book. (The first is 27 Tough Questions Pastors Ask.)

Right Turns addresses six topics that pastors--especially lead pastors--continually deal with: leadership, volunteer development, guest retention, personal life, staffing, and criticism. Dick has a few words here and there about preaching, but the book focuses on the bulk of what pastors do outside the pulpit.

Each of the chapters is short and addresses a specific how-to issue, often with an enumerated list of suggestions. For example, here is the title and substance of chapter 2: "Responding to Tithe Terrorists." Describing people who use money as the carrot/stick to get pastors to perform their preferred ministries as "tithe terrorists" is funny and apt, as well as typical of Dick's writing style. Chapter 8, "Six Steps in Determining Which Ministries to Stop Doing" delivers on its titles with precisely that.

By organizing his book this way, Dick enables pastors to read Right Turns as an instruction manual rather than as a novel. In other words, they can skip straight to the parts that interest them rather than reading it sequentially from beginning to end.

Right Turns is heavy on ministry practice and light on ministry theory. If you're looking for the latest and greatest theology of ministry, this is not your book. If you're looking for advice from a seasoned practitioner about how to do the daily stuff of ministry, this is a very useful book.

Right Turns, Not Just for Pastors!

I just finished the brand new book Right Turns: Navigational Decisions Leading Pastors Make in Growing the Church and it was a wonderful read! My friend Dick Hardy composed this work and it is the perfect sequel to his freshman project, 27 Tough Questions Pastors Ask.

Right Turns is broken down into six segments:

-Section 1: Leadership
-Section 2: Volunteer Development
-Section 3: Guest Retention
-Section 4: Personal Life
-Section 5: Staffing
-Section 6: Criticism

Dick covers "everything but preaching" which is great for pastors who don't have [the best] administration in place, have reached an unhappy plateau, or simply want to do better--because we can always do better.

For the Non-Pastors Out There

After I concluded my reading, what I realized was that Right Turns is not just for pastors. Although it certainly stems from Dick's many years as a ministry administrator and church growth consultant, Right Turns need not be just for ministers.

If you want advice grow growing your organization, business, or other people-based group, Right Turns is for YOU! Topics like leadership, volunteer development, customer service and hospitality (guest retention), personal life, staffing, and criticism are something we can all relate to. Here are a few examples.

-We all need to learn how to rule without dictating.
-We all need to learn how to motivate and train our staff and peers.
-We all need to learn how to maintain lives of integrity and wisdom.
-We all need to learn how to graciously deal with correct and not-so-correct criticism.

I may not presently be in ministry, but there is a wealth of relevant information to be found in Right Turns. Furthermore, because I do have an extensive background serving in various ministerial capacities, I can relate to much that is written in this book. I literally had flashbacks of many of those experiences as well as creative ideas for future ministerial endeavors.

Right Turns is also a gem because it can be read in full or consulted on a topic-specific basic. Who wants to use their washing machine to correct a tiny spill if they can just pull out their trusty Shout wipes and spot-clean?Right Turns is perfect for both situations. I find that the "spot-cleaning" ability is one of the criteria for longevity in non-fiction literature.
