Born to a white mother and Navajo father, Alvord spent her childhood in Crownpoint, NM, on the edge of the Navajo reservation. As a child, she was encouraged to read and dream. She went to Dartmouth University on a scholarship, and then medical school at Stanford University. When she returned to New Mexico to practice medicine at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, she soon realized that her patients were frightened of her manner and technical ability and that she needed to merge her state-of-the-art skills with her traditional culture. Few books are sheer pleasure to read from the very first page--like this one, for instance. Alvord grew up on a Navajo reservation. Her father had an alcohol problem, and despite being retiring, her mother taught her much about her heritage and how to be a warm and understanding person. With journalist Van Pelt's help, Alvord tells her life story and describes the culture of her people, setting both in the striking, seemingly limitless landscape of the Southwest. As far as Alvord knows, she is the first Navajo woman to become a surgeon; those who follow her on such a path have an excellent model. From her early education, she made the first major jump to become an undergraduate at Dartmouth, the antithesis, in many respects, to her previous life. Gifted with resilience and a sense of humor, she was also fortunate in having understanding, no-nonsense mentors. Medical school at Stanford, another major leap, was followed by her return to Gallup, New Mexico, for years of successful surgery. Combining and yet keeping distinct her Navajo medical ways and Western medicine is a major theme in Alvord's absorbing autobiography. William Beatty

Combinatorics is a subject of increasing importance, owing to its links with computer science, statistics and algebra. This is a textbook aimed at second-year undergraduates to beginning graduates. It stresses common techniques (such as generating functions and recursive construction) which underlie the great variety of subject matter and also stresses the fact that a constructive or algorithmic proof is more valuable than an existence proof. The book is divided into two parts, the second at a higher level and with a wider range than the first. Historical notes are included which give a wider perspective on the subject. More advanced topics are given as projects and there are a number of exercises, some with solutions given.

Best Single Book on Combinatorics

The book is divided into two parts corresponding roughly to undergraduate material and graduate. The selection of topics is robust; the writing is clear and consise. The level is senior and above. The reader should have some knowledge of advanced math such as group theory, and analysis of algorithms. Great book! One of the best ever!

Excellent book...very clear, well-organized

This is a graduate level text that presents advanced material and yet is easier to understand than most high school texts and could probably be used without trouble at the undergraduate level. The writing is vibrant and lucid; it is a pleasure to read. I could come up with a few minor complaints about the presentation of this or that but these comments would be silly and not very relevant.

The book contains an absolute wealth of topics. There is an interesting combinatorial approach to groups, and the book's presentation of certain topics, such as matroids and quasigroups, is among the best I have found; many books make these structures appear painfully abstract and difficult to grasp. The book is organized so that it's fairly easy to skip around, but I actually like the order in which the topics are presented.

This text makes an excellent addition to the collection of anyone interested in combinatorics, and if someone were to buy only one book on the subject, I would recommend this book. I think this would make an excellent textbook--it was used as such in one of my graduate courses, and would probably be suitable for an undergraduate course as well.

Sigmas all over the place

This isn't your usual "urn-has-3-red-balls-and-5-white-balls" sort of combinatorics book. It's sigma notation all over the place, if you know what I mean.

The first part can be used for undergraduates and the second part is more advanced. The book is broad in scope because, as the author explains, so is the subject matter.

The chapters have "techniques" and "algorithms." It's not a book that has a slew of examples of combinatorial problems (like so many), but leans toward mathematical sophistication in formalizing the techniques. This is either a feature or a bug, depending on what you needs are. For instance, it's not very often that introductory books present derrangements next to Fibonacci numbers. Or explain how calculate the average number of comparisons that Hoare's Quicksort does with a differential equation for the recurrence relation in the context of finite fields. It sounds scary, I know, but if you look at the explanation, you'll see you should have been born a nephew to this author.

In case you like Knuth's Concrete Mathematics you will like this book too (there's some overlap, because both are concerned with the analysis of algorithms). Knuth's book works more on skill-building, and I think Cameron's book is better for theoretical explanation.

Disclaimer: I haven't worked with the whole book (because of a lack of time - "Ars long, vita brevis", as they say).

Now an accomplished author and educator, Mr. Miller specializes in leading customized seminars on the National Electrical Code (NEC), as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E. Class and seminar attendees have included employees of companies such as Ford, A. O. Smith, and The Aerostructures Corporation, as well as academic institutions such as Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, and Purdue University. Good, but...

Although this got several excellent reviews, I was disappointed when I got it. Sent it right back. I am used to using my code book based on Articles. This book defines it's own chapters with no cross reference to NEC articles. I had specifically ordered this book because I had a few questions about water features that I wanted a better understanding of. Article 680 (swimming pools, fountains) wasn't even covered by this book. It looks like it would be a nice study manual, but like a few others I've read, I should have ordered the Handbook instead. Ya gets what ya pays for...

Miller's Illustrated Guide to the 2011 NEC is a great book with lots of comprehensive illustrations and references that point you in the right direction. It's a must have for anyone studying the code. Just remember that you will still need to refer to the NEC in order to grasp some of the more viable points. This book is a guide, just like it says in the title, and it does not have everything. I'm giving the book 4 out of 5 stars because i think that the new colorful pictures distract from the code and make absorption of the material more difficult. I also own the 2005 Illustrated Guide by Miller and I find the material in it easier to absorb because of the lack of color. Of course this could be a matter of taste but i think the publisher needs to go back to the same drawings in their next book.

Allows you to look something up, such as bathrooms, and will illustrate as well as site the NEC Codes that apply.

This is a very informative book. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Nec 210.11(C) deals with bathroom branch circuits. If you're not quite sure what they mean in the Code, on pg 142 in this book, you can see the different illustrations of what is allowed and what is not. And another plus is if you look for the bathroom again for example, it will have references to the codes that apply to the bathroom, such as 210.8 GFCI Protection. If you just have the NEC Code book it greatly helps in understanding and comprehension.

Adventure of Old Guy continues... except this this time, it's really a prequel. Old Guy is the oldest cybertank around, and when Earth is about to collapse under the weight of the Neoliberals, they cloned Old Guy and tried to use him as a weapon against the masses trying to survive the impending collapse. This novel, however, is spread all over the place, from the Neolibs planning to wipe out any semblance or potential of challenging their rule, to "supervisors' trying to survive another day, to the Librarians Temporal, the only effective resistance group trying to stay ahead of the authorities, and Old Guy, who had to obey the Neolibs due to extra directives (much like Robocop) but secretly seething, there is a huge battle at the end, where Old Guy broke his shackles, only to encounter his evil twin, and... well, I spoke too much already.

Think of it as political satire, sci-fi adventure, apocalypse, with a dose of self-deprecating humor, or as deprecating as a 2000 ton cybertank can be, and this is that novel. If you want straight adventure, try the previous books, which are more fun and less dark.

Satisfying, though short on Old Guy

A fun tale about the end of human life on Earth's surface, the death of hundreds of billions, and the importance of reading.
Old Guy guest stars in this one, but no more than a third is in his distinctive voice. The rest is centered on several human characters that play important roles in the liberation of the species of Earth. The result is a lot of fun, and a heavy handed, unsubtle political message. And a truly exquisite piece of torture-vengeance.

If you enjoyed any of the previous Old Guy work then this will appeal. It is all one story, but entertaining.

The breakdown of society during the neoliberal period.

Latest in the series is really good, but should be read after reading at least some of the earlier ones to set the stage. Regarding neoliberals (for those who know what we're talking about), from a recent interview with Noam Chomsky:

Williams: What are your opinions on the surprising progress of Donald Trump? Could it be explained by a climate of fear?

Chomsky: Fear, along with the breakdown of society during the neoliberal period. People feel isolated, helpless, victim of powerful forces that they do not understand and cannot influence.
