Interesting introduction to a much larger story - worth a read if you like Sci-Fi

This is a short story introduction to the Star Force series.
It is told from the point of view of a Father and a Son, as they evacuate a space station that is under attack from an alien race.
There is a lot of background in the story that is brushed over, that they have moved around a lot, possibly as refugees, the mother has died at the hands of the aliens, there is a war on, the father once worked for the Space Navy. There are other things as well, that the military is run by Star Force, and that they are very professional and seen as something to be respected.
Of course all of this is only hinted at. Normally this might be a bit frustrating, however, we know that there are 100 volumes coming in the series, so if you have around US$105 to spend, you can buy the series in the 'Origin' series 4 issue bundles and get a lot of these answers.
Overall the writing is pretty good though, the characters were well written, the epic scale of the station etc was well described and the first thing I did when I finished was bought the first volume 1-4 so I could continue, as I thought it well worth the read at this stage.
Everyone be aware - it is a VERY SHORT introduction - page numbers are listed on the amazon page when you buy these things?
But it’s worth the read - as it’s a bit of fun.

Good story, but one very "short" problem.

This could have been so wonderful. And please know that I've read this plus the first 3 episodes. The books are too short. And I mean too short horribly. It almost smacks of someone making them this short to get the purchase on the other episodes, instead of letting their work drive the audience to want to buy them. Make no mistake, the story is good and I could eventually become a fan of the main characters. But when a book is so short that you are not satisfied when it ends, then clearly it has not brought that "episode" to a conclussion. I would much rather pay more for a more complete story and longer book, than feel as though I'm being nickled and dimed just to see where the story goes. I gave it a generous three star rating because I enjoyed the story, but more to the point, I enjoyed the possibility of the story.I hope that this is helpful. Give the prologue a try, see if I'm off base on this.

Very disappointed

I wanted to like this story. It has a great series title and intriguing illustrated cover art. Sadly, there just isn't very much to get excited about. As a prologue, this book is more of a teaser, than a real attempt to tell a story. There isn't anything wrong with a set-up story per se. But even teasers need to have substance to them. It isn't enough to merely 'tease' us with trite background information and world building. We need to have a reason to care about the characters and what's going to unfold. I never reached that point. Heck, I don't even know what the main characters names are besides 'father' and 'son'. Not a very good way to engage a reader.

As a result of this prologue holding back anything that would truly make it an interesting read, I found myself fighting to keep from skimming its contents. This is really disappointing considering the book is only 8 pages long.

Readers who love a really slow-build up, and can put up with having to constantly shell out money for numerous short installments in what appears to be a lengthy sci-fi serial may be interested. Others may want to wait to see if the author puts out an omnibus edition, at which point, even I may give this series another look. But right now, I can't in good conscience, recommend this series.

About the Author
Aga Bojko is a UX researcher with a passion for designing studies to answer difficult design- and business-related questions. Currently, she is a VP of User Experience at GfK Custom Research North America, where she leads the Bay Area UX team. Aga has over ten years of experience with various types of eye trackers that she has used to conduct UX research with software applications, websites, instructional material, pharmaceutical labels, and consumer product packaging. She's tracked (for a good reason) a wide range of visuals, from butterflies flying across the screen to fresh meat in grocery stores. When she's not planning or running studies, Aga is serving as the Managing Editor of the UX magazine, writing articles, and speaking about eye tracking and other research-related subjects at conferences worldwide. Aga holds a BS in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, an MS in Human-Computer Interaction from DePaul University, and an MS in Human Factors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

THE best book about eye tracking

You’re probably checking this book out because you either (a) do eye tracking, or (b) are thinking of doing eye tracking, or (c) are just generally curious about eye tracking.

Whichever one it is, take my word for it: You ought to read this book.

I’ve always been curious about eye tracking and how it can inform user experience design decisions. (In fact, my book Don’t Make Me Think was originally supposed to be based in part on some eye tracking, but it turned out to be too hard to do at the time.) I've always tried to read everything that’s available about eye tracking—particularly about eye tracking and usability.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a whole lot, since much of the interesting work is very proprietary. And most of what’s available hasn’t been very illuminating or inspiring.

Which is why it’s so fortunate that Aga decided to write this book, and share her deep, practical knowledge so freely. Plus, she writes really well.

I liked it so much, I offered to write the foreword, and I *hate* writing forewords.

An honest analysis of the strengths and limitations of eye tracking as research methodology!

This book does a great job of introducing complex questions in an accessible format. Perhaps none more important than: will eye tracking help me answer my research questions for this project? What's more, assuming that it can, what presentations and metrics are of the most value for the research focus? The author asks that we set aside our excitement and evaluate eye tracking as we would any data collection tool.

I am very grateful for all of the examples included in the book from actual research projects. The concrete presentations really helped me appreciate the flexibility and attention required to design eye tracking research which attempts to control for confounding variables (particularly evident in Chapter 5).

Great introductory text for eye tracking in UX

This book is aimed at a professional audience that may be planning to use eye tracking in user experience evaluations. The book covers a fair amount of material about the human eye & what tracking it's movements can and cannot tell us about human attention. It is well laid out across engaging chapters that gradually step through the process of learning about what eye tracking is, how to apply it to UX research and finally data analysis. The book includes several real world examples that are quite useful for illustrating key points in the text. The book is not aimed at an academic audience and does not give a lot of space for discussing the biology & control of the eye, or how eye tracking is used in modern psychology and neuroscience to evaluate visual attention. However, the book has many great references if one needs more detailed info on the finer points of scientific practice. It is a great primer on the ins & outs of general practice on using a tracker and many great tips on common problems to avoid when designing experiments and helpful text on basics of experiment design and data analysis in UX research.

Since tsarist times, Roma in Russia have been portrayed as both rebellious outlaws and free-spirited songbirds—in each case, as if isolated from society. In Soviet times, Russians continued to harbor these two, only seemingly opposed, views of “Gypsies,” exalting their songs on stage but scorning them on the streets as liars and cheats. Alaina Lemon’s Between Two Fires examines how Roma themselves have negotiated these dual images in everyday interactions and in stage performances.
Lemon’s ethnographic study is based on extensive fieldwork in 1990s Russia and focuses on Moscow Romani Theater actors as well as Romani traders and metalworkers. Drawing from interviews with Roma and Russians, observations of performances, and conversations, as well as archives, literary texts, and media, Lemon analyzes the role of theatricality and theatrical tropes in Romani life and the everyday linguistics of social relations and of memory. Historically, the way Romani stage performance has been culturally framed and positioned in Russia has served to typecast Gypsies as “natural” performers, she explains. Thus, while theatrical and musical performance may at times empower Roma, more often it has reinforced and rationalized racial and social stereotypes, excluding them from many Soviet and Russian economic and political arenas. Performance, therefore, defines what it means to be Romani in Russia differently than it does elsewhere, Lemon shows. Considering formal details of language as well as broader cultural and social structures, she also discusses how racial categories relate to post-Soviet economic changes, how gender categories and Euro-Soviet notions of civility are connected, and how ontological distinctions between “stage art” and “real life” contribute to the making of social types. This complex study thus serves as a corrective to romantic views of Roma as detached from political forces.

As they drive through the desert in their beat-up car, they keep up a steady banter about the mundane—school, girls, and everything in between. But as they move closer to their destination, each must confront the family history that left an indelible imprint on their lives.

Character-driven Story at Its Best

This is an impressive example of what a character-led story should be. The story tells of two brothers on a journey that is sad, happy, and interesting. I became engrossed with the characters as the story evolved. With each page, the brothers became more flushed out, multidimensional, and real. By the end, I felt myself truly rooting and caring for the them. In addition to the impressive character development, the backdrop and storytelling was done beautifully. The author did a great job at balancing character/story details and leaving the reader's imagination to fill in the pieces. A great read.

Big-hearted story, compelling start to finish

What a fantastic story. These two brothers feel so real, and the writing shows a sharp sense of humor, even though it's no comedy. It's a compelling and very moving read, with uncommonly sympathetic characters in a story with a great big heart. A triumph.

Kind of a tragicomedy

A touching story about brotherly love, family trauma, and closure. What I liked most was the hysterical banter between the two lead characters, and how it masked their deeper feelings and anxieties. Really well imagined and executed. Highly recommend.

Condon has done an excellent job pulling together a broad range of in-depth ideas for sustainable cities. The work is well-documented. It's highly readable. The text is supplemented by interesting photos and graphics. Every public library should have a copy in the stacks!

WOW I love this book, so big and thick, detailed fashion looks, cute pictures.. i'm 20 and i love it, but this is also great for young girls into fashion! i included random pictures because I wish sellers knew we are more inclined to buy if we get a sample of the inside!

Hip and stylish!

It is a fashion photo journal of this designer. I love her sense of fashion and the hip characters on each page! I have so much fun with this book. The only draw back is the paper doesn't work well with all the markers as well as they are double sided prints. Regardless, it is still one of my favorite books!

Beautiful pictures love it

At first I was a little intimidated by so much detail. i started out coloring simple fashion dolls with little or no background. Eventually I wanted more details and began these pictures. i love that you can color the main people leaving the backgrounds undone and it still looked great. As I increased my pencil collection i began adding color to the backgrounds, expertmenting with the faces and hair and disregarded pics as good or bad. it's a learning process and satisfying to compare the good results with the bad. ive traveled with it often and a page did come loose so i ordered another now certain i will enjoy coloring them again. the paper is nice and white and thick. i wish the pages were one sided. i use prismacolors so im not sure how paint would work. now that the price is lower i say get one.

Great color photos, detailed explanations of plants. Great buy!

When I received this book, I read it cover to cover! The book highlights various perrenials, trees, shrubs, and even annuals with a color photo and complete description of the area of the garden in which the plant will perform best. The author details the problems with each plant, including pests, mold, deer resistance, etc. This book touches on xeriscaping (most of the plants that perform well in the Rocky Mountains are drought-friendly). The book also has a fair amount of detail on lawns, taking care of gardening problems, etc., but the reason to buy the book is for the wonderful explanations on plants to put in your Rocky Mountain garden.

Top Notch Rocky Mountain Garden Guide

We bought an old house with an old yard, which needs some work. I bought this book to try to get some ideas for new plants.

This book is nothing short of beautiful. The book is sectioned into chapters according to type of plant, such as trees, ground covers, roses, shrubs. There are color headers for each section, such as purple for flowers, which helps to locate things in a hurry.

Each tree or plant has a page with a color photo and details, such as size, planting and watering guides, tips and similar recommendations. It is very thorough.

There are also chapters on butterfly gardening, deer problems, and pest remedies.

This is a very good guide for anyone living in the Rocky Mountain region.
