When Rosemary walked into my fitness studio, she had about eighty pounds of unhealthy body weight. Her motivation (a common one, I might add) was to see those three-digit numbers on her bathroom scale plummet as quickly as possible. As I do with all new clients, I began by asking Rosemary to tell me her “story,” which revealed a wealth of valuable information as to why Rosemary was carrying the weight she had. Here is what Rosemary shared with me:

“I am a mother of three. I am married and I don’t work. My husband has a really good job and we do very well financially. My husband doesn’t notice I exist, and I pretty much do what he says to keep the peace. He often says mean things. I try to ignore them. I am 44 and soon I will 45. I used to have some friends and now I have none. Social interactions are difficult for me. I feel old and I’m tired all the time. Taking my kids for a walk in the evenings is exhausting. They want me to play with them more but lately I don’t feel much like playing. Nothing much interests me anymore. But I love my kids.

“As a family we normally go on vacation through my husband’s work two, sometimes three times a year. We always fly, which I really don’t like, as I’m claustrophobic and feel uncomfortable in the airplane seats. My body annoys and frustrates me. While I know I should be exercising more and probably eating differently, I don’t have the motivation to do so. My husband also buys my clothes. I hate wearing them. I think I look awful. My husband and I don’t have sex anymore. He’s probably having an affair, but I don’t care. I don’t care much about anything anymore actually, except, as I said, my kids.

“I’m originally from London, England. We moved to California several years ago because of my husband’s job. I have no family here, which isn’t a big deal, since I’m not close with my family anyway. I miss England sometimes, but mainly I try not to think about it. I’m here because I think if I don’t start doing something about my weight and my health I’ll probably get sick, and then there’ll be children who won’t have a mother. My husband’s a good father, I guess, but the kids aren’t close to him at all. They are much more comfortable with me.”

When I asked Rosemary about her childhood, she told me, “There’s not much to tell, really. I was the youngest of eight. Nobody noticed I existed. Everyone was always busy doing things. I mainly just hung out by myself. Had a few friends―nobody special. And that’s about it, I guess. I remain in contact with one of my sisters who now lives in Australia, but we’re not close. I was an awkward child. I’m still awkward, I guess. I take anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication, and sometimes I feel as I though I can’t cope with my life anymore, and if nothing changes I won’t be here next year. I’d like to come off the medication. And that’s about it…my story.”

I thanked Rosemary for sharing her story with me. And I then asked her if she could see any relationships between her story about herself and her challenges with her weight. I also asked if she could intuitively identify anything from her childhood that may have influenced what she is currently experiencing with her weight and health today. I like to ask my clients to share their intuitive thoughts. In many cases, clients doubt their own intuition, yet I have found them to almost always be correct.

I asked the question about Rosemary’s childhood because our present experiences are always a reflection of our past experiences and the stories about ourselves that we have come to identify with. We bring all our stories, whether positive or negative, into every moment of our lives without being consciously aware of it. If we cannot tell ourselves a different story, then we will be forever locked inside one type of experience of life, and we are never free to show up in our lives any differently. We fail to recognize that there is more to us than the stories we repeatedly tell ourselves, and then we continue to repeat the story as though it’s the only story we could ever experience. But just like a library, where you get to choose one book one week, read it, experience it, and then return it for another, you, too, can choose new stories in life if at any point you feel that the current story you are living and experiencing is losing its appeal and fulfillment. Not only is your story not you, but you are a writer of your story, not merely an actor following a script.

More than just a diet book.

This is a delightful book designed to help you discover your path to a healthy weight and a strong body & spirit. Michelle helps you look at the reasons why you might be overeating and leads you to look at the amazing person you really are. The book includes some exercise & nutrition guidance, but the main focus is self- growth.

Kazuo Shinohara (1925-2006) has proved to be the most influential architect of his generation in shaping contemporary Japanese architecture. His influence stretches from Toyo Ito, Itsuko Hasegawa and Kazunari Sakamoto, via Kazuyo Sejima, to the many excellent young studios working today. Nevertheless, his work remains little known in the West, partly due to the scarcity of publications on his work - which in turn was due to the rigorous control the architect maintained over publication of his work. Shinohara carefully selected the photographs and texts that accompanied each project, and even refused Gustavo Gili's first proposal in 2001 to revisit and photograph his buildings. This publication has only been possible after his death in 2006, thanks to the generosity of the heirs.

I did not think this book had all of what it does have. I thought it was just templates, but , it also has directions on what pose is standard for a certain clothing item. It also has directions on how to color the fabric and embellishments. It has so much more. I highly recommend this book to designers and also to models.

Worthwhile purchase

I liked this book very much. It provided many poses and ideas for rendering with different mediums. I was surprised to see current fashion trends represented and a fresh style throughout. All the contributing artists have a clean, uncomplicated but totally professional sketching style, which is not as intimidating for beginners but still very effective in showcasing the garment's design. I haven't worked with the image CD included, but anticipate it will be of great value!

Copyright-Free Fashion Poses

This is a great resource for anyone who wants to draw fashion sketches. It's a selection of models drawn in a wide variety of poses, which you can use as the base for your own fashion sketches. These sketches are copyright-free, which means you're allowed to trace them, photocopy them, scan them, or use them however you'd like in the creation of your fashion sketches. Or you can simply use them as references for drawing your own models.

The book includes a CD, which has all of the sketches included as image files. There are a couple of different file types, including JPG. You can save the files to your computer and open them in Photoshop, for creating digital fashion sketches, or you can print them and trace over them---whatever you like.

I'm impressed with the variety of poses that are included. Most are women, but there's a small selection of men, as well as teens and plus-sized models. Most are standing---typical dynamic poses---but a few are sitting. There are poses specifically designed to be appropriate for sportswear, evening wear, casual wear, juniors' wear, and so forth. You're sure to find multiple poses that appeal to you, and if you can't find one that's exactly what you need, you can always mix-and-match! The models are mostly the same size and proportions, so it's easy to copy/paste elements from one model onto the body of another, creating your own unique poses. (I use Photoshop Elements for this.)

While I'm at it, I generally adjust the proportions, because these are typical high-fashion models, which means they are NOT sized like human beings. They're quite skinny, for one thing, plus their legs are insanely long, their torsos are stretched out, their arms sometimes reach to their knees, and their hands and feet are enormous! It's the one flaw with this book. It isn't difficult to fix, though, provided you understand the concept of "heads." I draw a guideline beside the drawing that shows more normal proportions (usually eight heads tall), and then I shrink various parts of the body until it matches the guideline. Sure, it takes a little work, but the end result is always worth it. By the time I'm done with the sketch, it no longer resembles the original in any way.

Another bonus is that the book includes instructions for drawing different types of clothing and fabric, as well as accessories (shoes, etc.). I wouldn't recommend it for artists who are just starting out, because the proportions aren't accurate. In other words, don't use this as a guide to learning figure drawing, because your models will come out looking all wrong! But if you have a little experience and are comfortable re-sizing the sketches to suit your personal artistic vision, then it's a great resource. I'll give it four stars and recommend it to anyone who needs copyright-free models for their fashion sketches.

Also recommended: "Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy," and the two "Figure It Out" books by Christoper Hart. If you're struggling to learn how to draw your own models, his books will help!

Bold Conquest

I love the historical part of this novel and was completely satisfied with the relationship between the hero and heroine. The Battle of Hastings is one of my favorite periods for historical romance. If you are a Virginia Henley fan you won't be disappointed.

Promising.... but fizzled out

Set in 1066 following the Battle of Hastings, and the Norman invasion of Saxon England, the story follows Guy de Montgomery as he (and his brothers) take Godstone, the family home of Lillyth, who he claims as his own. He is fascinated by her, and is determined to woo her, and secure her heart.

Virginia Henley's historical details are excellent, and her depictions of Medieval life at the castle, realistic. The sub stories were well done, dealing with Lillyth's mother, Guy's brothers, and the other women at the castle, and this helped provide depth to the story as well as moving it along. However, I found the "feisty" heroine far to "twenty-first century" to be believable. The relationship between Guy and Lillyth seemed to lack spark, and the end of the story was rushed. It was such a pity, because the setting was beautifully depicted, but was let down by romance between the main characters.

Is it worth buying? Yes. Is it a keeper? Sadly no.

I personally loved Virginia Henley books for over 25 years. There is a good blend of history in most of her stories. I liked the fact that the author takes you on a journey and you are not stuck inside 4 walls of a room like some authors. Stories should travel and transport the reader.

I did like the characters. I did like the fact that the male lead was a fair judge. I liked how he wooed her. However, I was horrified that the male lead would willingly commit bigamy. I guess that is no different from some real life people.

Though understandable, I was horrified by the scene where she snapped and killed her abusive husband in such a violent way.

The book had interesting secondary characters. I laughed over the brothers fighting over the female lead. It was humorous and interesting dialog.

Was this a fast pace book? Yes, but the story had cohesion instead of a myriad of book ideas. Also, the description of places and characters were not so verbose that the reader feels like, "Okay, I get it! Can we move on a bit faster?" Ms. Henley doesn't bore her readers in that way. So, it works for me.

However, the book ending was a bit abrupt or shortened. I felt the author could have built it up more. However, a happy ending is always nice. :).

I once read a sort romance by Ms Henley that was combined with stories from other authors. I didn't care for her short story because the character build up was lacking in her short book.

I would recommend this book. Another author you may want to try is Katherine Suttcliffe - an excellent period writer. Ms Suttcliffe writes more or less about the 1800's. A good period writer is Heather Graham who writes period romances as well as scary stories (don't prefer the latter due to you taste). I loved Ms Graham's Viking stories. Another favorite writer is Sandra Brown. Ms Brown writes 1800's and contemporary. She can do can no wrong! ;). Ms brown can write a great story as a thin paperback, or a thick novel and can get her story across to the audience and leaves them satisfied.

Sherlockian fun for kids of all ages

This a fun, fast-paced introduction to Sherlock Holmes for kids who aren't quite ready for the original stories. Characters, especially Holmes and the members of the Baker Street Irregulars, are well drawn, and the impression of Victorian London, with its homeless children, filth and exploitative child labor, is vivid. I didn't especially like the unsympathetic way Watson was portrayed, but the idea behind the series is that Watson, in his written accounts, de-emphasized the important part the Irregulars played in solving Holmes' cases because he was jealous of their sleuthing talent.

At the end there's a cast of characters and a glossary including cockney rhyming slang, also a more detailed explanation of how to use the slang and invent your own, how Holmes used the art of deduction, the importance of disguises, and the various means of transportation in Victorian London. All in all, it's an entertaining, suspenseful read for kids, and Sherlock Holmes fans of all ages.

Everyone loves a good mystery, and there are no better mysteries than those involving Sherlock Holmes.

In his newest case, Holmes is hired to investigate a murder at a local circus and calls upon his new assistants - The Baker Street Irregulars - for help.

The Baker Street Irregulars are a group of young orphan boys who live very near Mr. Holmes. Led by the two oldest boys, Ozzie and Wiggins, they improve their own detective skills by helping Mr. Holmes whenever and wherever he needs them.

Set in Victorian London, this story is action-packed and fast-paced. Ozzie and Wiggins, along with the other boys, add excitement to the mystery at hand. The characters speak in Victorian slang, which really helps the reader get into the setting, but it makes me worry that some readers may get confused. However, there is a glossary provided in the back of the book. Also included are pieces about Victorian slang, the Science of Deduction, and Victorian hats and transportation, which were very fun and interesting to read.

THE FALL OF THE AMAZING ZALINDAS really keeps you guessing and is perfect for younger male readers.

A Clever Way to Introduce Young Readers to Sherlock Holmes

On a chilly, wet day, in the heart of London's posh West End, two hungry street urchins stand on a corner begging for spare change. Wiggins, the leader of the Baker Street Irregulars, huddles with newcomer Osgood "Ozzie" Manning across from 221B Baker Street, home of the legendary master detective Sherlock Holmes.

Ozzie, who recently lost his mother, is a clever and welcome addition to the Irregulars. During the day he toils as an apprentice to a vile scrivener, but after dark he slips away to join his new friends, while continuing to search for his great-aunt in the hopes of learning the identity of his father.

While begging on the street corner, the Irregulars hope that the "Master," their name for the world-famous detective, will send for them. They need the money for survival, but more importantly, they are eager for an adventure. Their hopes are answered after Holmes engages the band of orphans to help solve a gruesome case. The famous detective needs the help of the Irregulars to search for clues in the murder of The Amazing Zalindas, a trio of circus performers who plunged to their deaths during a live performance.

The Irregulars, along with Wiggins's ferret Shirley, visit the circus and nose around. They encounter a lion tamer, a strongman, Siamese twins, an angry knife thrower, and a pair of fortune tellers: Madame Estrella and her beguiling daughter, Pilar. The Irregulars track down clues and uncover evidence, which proves to be a great assistance to Master. The boys also make a new friend, who aids them in solving the case.

As the murder investigation unfolds, the danger escalates and a sinister plot is discovered, which not only puts the Irregulars in peril, but also threatens to topple the British monarchy.

An intriguing setting, an engaging cast of young characters, authentic historic details and a complex plot make for enjoyable reading. THE FALL OF THE AMAZING ZALINDAS, the first installment in the Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars series, is also a clever way to introduce young readers to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

The section at the back of the book, "Facts and Practicals for the Aspiring Detective," contains useful tools to help readers become acquainted with the characters, historic facts and Victorian-era slang and dialect. Middle-graders --- who love not only reading mysteries, but also solving them --- should enjoy this first book in a promising series.
