This memoir is a bitter review of Stockman's years in the Reagan Administration. It is a book with few heroes and many fools. The author claims naivete as his excuse. Although the narrative is somewhat confusing, overall, its backstage view of policymaking leaves one discouraged, even frightened by the superficiality. The book is a necessary library purchase for two reasons: the notoriety of the book and its author, and the insider's view of key policies still in place and key personalities still in power. About the Author
David A. Stockman was elected as a Michigan congressman in 1976, and joined the Reagan White House in 1981 as budget director. During nearly two decades at the Blackstone Group, where he was one of the early partners, and at Heartland Industrial Partners, a firm he founded, Stockman was a private equity investor. Born in Fort Hood, Texas, Stockman now lives in Connecticut. He is the author of The Great Deformation: How Crony Capitalism Corrupted Free Markets and Democracy.

Politics Never Change

The real mechanisms of legislation are clearly defined in 'Triumph'. A naif Stockman entered our national government as though there is a functional and real logic to getting things done. Instead he discovered, as perhaps many suspect, just to what extent special interests control all outcomes. The saddest part of his commentary is the simple fact that 'our' way of doing the nation's business has not changed since Reagan, nor has the appearance of changing in near future. "Act of Congress", concerning writing of the Dodd-Frank law, by Washington Post journalist Kaiser, is a more current version of the same sad story.

Should be required reading for every fan of "Trickle Down" economics.

Some reviewers have criticized the volume of economic and financial minutia in this book, and it is true that the reader is going to wade through quite a swamp of detail, but that only serves to emphasize how intractable are the problems of governing something as large as America's economy. I can only say, please take the time if you are serious about how our country's financial affairs are managed, and keep Santayana's classic aphorism in mind: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.".

A Must Read

An entertaining and revealing look at the development and failure of the Reagan economic revolution through the eyes of his OMB director. Candid, hard hitting, easy to read and hard to put down, the book truly explores the gap between ideology and political reality. I wish more people would read this book. You would have a better understanding of why nothing changes in DC. A must read.

More than a third of the entries come with an example sentence to show how the combination in question is used in real life. For each kanji character or compound, furigana has been provided, making the book readable to students at all levels.

About the Author

KAKUKO SHOJI has been an instructor of Japanese at the University of Hawaii since 1968, and is the author of Basic Connections and Japanese Core Words and Phrases (both published by Kodansha International). Shoji was also the supervising editor of Kodansha's Effective Japanese Usage Guide.

Good but not enough.

This is a pretty good book for the most part. It gives lots of words for different situations and shows their common connections. I just wish there was more example sentences as well as an index for what pages the words are on. The words are still easy to find given the situations of Home, Daily life, People, School & Work, Travel and Entertainment in the contents. Overall I would recommend this book to any one who can read hiragana and katakana the formatting is much nicer than the authors other titles and you can just flip through any section when your board since there is no structure to follow.

Book is very helpful in displaying the information needed on how common phrases should be worded in Japanese. The sections are well thought out. I use this as a reference many times through studying and to help translate.

Very Useful for serious learners.

This book is geared towards more serious learners and not for someone whose just wanting to learn something for a short trip to japan, so if you're interested in only learning something minor or not continuing your studies, then this book is not for you. That being said, it's a extremely useful book for hardcore learners of the Japanese language. This book is more of a reference book but it gives detailed explanations on how exactly a word should be said so you know how and when to use it. It'll definitely make you sound and feel more natural in the Japanese language.

This book does not have a index but the well organized table of context does make up as a good substitute. Also, there is no romanji (which is good thing), so you do need to know hiragana and katakana before picking up this book. This book does use furigana so you don't have to know the kanji right off. I would suggest this book for upper-beginner to intermediate learners. One neat feature is that there is a Appendix at the end of the book that visually shows you correct and incorrect collocations (word pairings).

I already love this book and can see me using it for a long time to come.

Slightly dated translation of an excellent work

"The Twelve Caesars" is normally a book I would recommend as an introduction to the classics, with its (usually) forthright and arch pen portraits of Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. As a whole it makes lively and entertaining reading, even if the last part of each chapter devoted to scholarly and literary achievements of each Emperors reign (obviously pretty short in the cases of Galba, Otho and Vitellus) is a bit sedate after the preceding intrigue, scandal and gore. The occasionally archaic language and crowded layout of this translation make this slightly less accessible than a more contemporary translation such as The Twelve Caesars (Penguin Classics) (even if some of the references to "strumpets" and "unnatural pollution" are pretty amusing in their own right), although you do get some material not normally included in the later editions.

Independent of price, a modern translation and reader-friendly typeface and layout would be worth an extra star, but this edition is still quite serviceable (not to mention free).

In a collage of journal entries, free-verse poems, and renderings of poems in the Acoma language, he draws on life experiences over the past ten years—recalling time spent in academic conferences and writers' colonies, jails and detox centers—to convey something of the personal and cultural history of dislocation. As an American Indian artist living at times on the margins of mainstream culture, Ortiz has much to tell about the trials of alcoholism, poverty, displacement. But in the telling he affirms the strength of Native culture even under the most adverse conditions and confirms the sustaining power of Native beliefs and connections: "With our hands, we know the sacred earth. / With our spirits, we know the sacred sky."

Like many of his fellow Native Americans, Ortiz has been "out there somewhere"—Portland and San Francisco, Freiburg, Germany, and Martinique—away from his original homeland, culture, and community. Combining Native American history, personal confession and social critique in a clear, conversational style, Ortiz tends to avoid metaphor and elaborate language or fixed poetic structures. The first of five sections centers on time spent in diverse institutions: the academy, writers' colonies, various academic conferences, jail and detox centers. In "Headlands Journal," an essay that mixes poetry and prose, Ortiz begins with a meditation on Native populations in prison, moves to tell a story about three visiting Chinese artists and then by the end of the essay addresses his anger when someone calls the Acoma Pueblo language "foreign." The series "What Indians?," written for the Venice Biennale, addresses with humor and anger the control that the dominant culture has over Native American self-representation: "Real or unreal. Real and or unreal. They were made up. It didn't matter." Those who turn to Ortiz's work for its mixture of insightful, no-nonsense political analysis and poetry rooted in Acoma culture will be more interested in the last three sections of the book. There are numerous poems about the importance of the land and of the continuing struggle to regain the land, such as "Telling and Showing Her" and "Acoma Poems," printed in both the Acoma Pueblo language and English. If, as in poems like "Beauty All Around: A Moment on the Lakota Prairie," Ortiz moves too easily from the sunset ("beauty all around me") to a series of questions about cultural appropriation, this book still asks crucial questions as much as it argues for beauty. Secret Pleasures

The "stars" of American Indian literature--James Welch, Leslie Silko, Scott Momaday--are only the beautiful surface of the genre. Dive deeper, and you will find treasures like Peter Blue Cloud, Ray Young Bear, Anita Endrezze, and the incomparable Simon J. Ortiz.
Ortiz writes with a brilliance and clarity all Americans could aspire to, and this little collection of pieces, modulating from the grim depths of alcoholism and prison to the open spaces filled with joyful children, is representative of his work. His meditation on a sparrow's nest is worth the cover charge, discussion of the place of English in the mind of the Indian artist ("Beauty All Around") is a model of deeply felt exposition, and the cycle of poems on whether Indians exist is both witty and tragic.
Taste the best, a literary flavor perhaps too exotic for the general reader, but worth the adventure. This is a writer to remember and return to.

Simon Ortiz remains one of the most well-known American Indian (Acoma Pueblo) poets living today. He began writing during the American Indian Literary Renaissance and is quite prolific. His poetry weaves real-life events, oral stories, history, and Pueblo culture together, creating experiences that allow both Native and non-Native readers insights into Ortiz's world.

Out There Somewhere is divided into six parts. Part I (Margins) contains numerous politically driven statements that discuss colonization and post-colonization effects on Native peoples. Many of the poems are also written as if they are journal entries, and several reveal personal past experiences that Ortiz himself faced. This includes instances where individuals call the Pueblo language "foreign"--which of course it cannot be, as it is a language that is Indigenous to the North Americas and is not "foreign."

Part II (Images) deals with self-identity issues. I believe that one of the strongest poems in the entire book--"What Indians?"--is found in this section. This poem discusses the way in which colonized peoples are often forced into a certain identity by those that have colonized them. The poem states:

Like other colonized Indigenous peoples, cultures, and communities throughout the world, Native Americans have experienced and endured identities imposed upon them by colonial powers, most of which originated in Europe. This imposition as resulted to a great extent--more than we admit and realize--in the loss of a sense of a centered human self and the weakening and loss of Indigenous cultural identity.

Part III (Gifts) delves into small daily gifts that people have in their lives. This includes family for many. For Ortiz, he also counts a special garden that he and his family tend. Part IV (Horizons) includes several key poems that discuss knowledge, especially Pueblo language, and how it can be used. This section includes the "Acoma Poems" which are written entirely in Acoma Pueblo language--a special treat!--and they are then translated. I find it quite significant to see Indigenous authors writing in their own language; this section is beautifully written. Part V (Ever) includes several pieces that deal with ceremonies and Part VI (Connections After All) has some wonderful poems that are to be read more like songs.

Overall, all of these poems leave an impression on the reader. Ortiz masterfully uses different types of poems to relay information to the reader, sharing with us what it means to be Acoma Pueblo, Native, American, and a human. The imagery is fascinating and poems like "What Indians?" will leave you reflecting. Highly recommended!

This book is a great read, with many illuminating discussions from two solid scholars. Very good for figuring out what the field of Anglo-Saxon studies was like a few decades back. Lapidge's chapter is especially valuable and enduring.

but quickly turns in to a self-reflection on how great Giuliani thinks he is as a leader

I bought this book for a class - it was part of the reading list. The book starts off decently with valuable lessons about leadership, but quickly turns in to a self-reflection on how great Giuliani thinks he is as a leader. In light of recent events and demonstrations of character/leadership, I cannot in good conscience give this book higher than one star. Even if you're a big fan of him personally, the writing just isn't there.

Giuliani stood up when the towers fell...

Forget about politics. Forget about extreme Muslims. Forgot about Republican or Democrat. Forget about Giuliani's personal life. Just forget about it.

This book is about the defining moments of 9/11 and the leadership it needed in order not to descend into chaos. This man has put his heart and soul into this event and showed great leadership you can learn from.

The writings in 'Leadership' give you great insight into the situation of the event and dealings of the mayor. Courage as well as leadership prevail in keeping the objective of his mission close. Information is critical when chaos is lurking around the corner. Sleep can be denied.

Being European I'm not biassed in my judgement of the person or politician Giuliani. When you read this book about mayor Giuliani there's a lot you can learn from.

Interesting book....slow read.

I agree with one of the previous reviewers that this WAS a slow read, but it was a read that I learned a lot from. Giuliani is a brilliant man and leader, and his views on leadership, politics, and being a good human being were something that I hope to benefit from.
It was extrememly interesting to read his blow by blow accounts of what happened on September 11. He handled the entire situation with the utmost professionalism and perfect grace.
Where the book gets slow is in other areas talking about certain events that have happened throughout his career as an attorney, and as an aspiring politician. Though important to the premise of the book, they get a little long winded which is why this book took me a while to read.
All in all, a good book for anyone interested in Giuliani the man, as well as learning good leadership and success skills.
