Great color photos, detailed explanations of plants. Great buy!

When I received this book, I read it cover to cover! The book highlights various perrenials, trees, shrubs, and even annuals with a color photo and complete description of the area of the garden in which the plant will perform best. The author details the problems with each plant, including pests, mold, deer resistance, etc. This book touches on xeriscaping (most of the plants that perform well in the Rocky Mountains are drought-friendly). The book also has a fair amount of detail on lawns, taking care of gardening problems, etc., but the reason to buy the book is for the wonderful explanations on plants to put in your Rocky Mountain garden.

Top Notch Rocky Mountain Garden Guide

We bought an old house with an old yard, which needs some work. I bought this book to try to get some ideas for new plants.

This book is nothing short of beautiful. The book is sectioned into chapters according to type of plant, such as trees, ground covers, roses, shrubs. There are color headers for each section, such as purple for flowers, which helps to locate things in a hurry.

Each tree or plant has a page with a color photo and details, such as size, planting and watering guides, tips and similar recommendations. It is very thorough.

There are also chapters on butterfly gardening, deer problems, and pest remedies.

This is a very good guide for anyone living in the Rocky Mountain region.

It's not Brain Surgery � So why is it so hard to do well?

"Knock Your Socks Off" is an easy to read, well-organized, thorough introduction to the crucial aspects of providing excellent customer service. I kept it on the corner of my desk and read it during lunch hours. The 31 short chapters (approx. 150 pages) can be finished in just a week or two. I intend to pass it along to the Customer Service Reps that work for me as "required reading" (or maybe even splurge and buy them their own copy!)
The book is organized in Four Parts:
1. The Fundamental Principles of Knock Your Socks Off Service - includes the RATER factors: Reliability, Assurance, Tangibles, Empathy, Responsiveness.
2. The How To's of Knock Your Socks Off Service - honesty, rules, doing the right thing, listening, asking questions, winning words and soothing phrases, telephone tips, writing skills, details, thank-yous.
3. The Problem-Solving Side of Knock Your Socks Off Service - how to fix problems, fix the person, apologize, and handling nasty customers.
4. Knock Your Socks Off Service Fitness - Taking Care of You - how to stay calm, professional, and competent and how to have fun doing it
Whether you're new to the business of providing customer service or a seasoned pro, this book will give lots of great advice and a positive perspective on the challenges of providing good customer service. Unnecessarily Verbose

This book was required for a course on customer service. Most of the information I felt to be common sense, the remainder was written in too many words. This book could easily have been consolidated into far less pages than presently exist. If it was not required I would not have purchased and certainly would not purchase again or recommend. I would however contemplate the distribution of this book to those entirely lacking in customer service skills, but that is usually more of an attitude issue than ability issue.

As always, the package arrived timely, in good condition and and as advertised.

This is the best book of its kind that I have seen. The language is accessible and down to earth without being chatty or in appripriately colloquial. the book could be used at any level I can think of. The material is clear and comprehensive. The practice advocated is real world and sound. Oh, and it's readable. It's also broad enough to apply about anywhere I can think of. I don't think I'm going to need another reference or text for this topic.

A rare excellent piece of work

As a financial risk quant who uses time series models extensively I have always wondered how models such as VaR (quantiles of time series models) always seem to get it terribly wrong at episodes of market stress and crises. The magnitude and frequency of extreme losses are fatally underestimated. Moreover, such models are perpetually late, ie. show a signal after the crisis had started. Having a formal education in physics, I have always had deep respect for great minds in the history of science--whose works (theorems and laws) were used as pillars of knowledge by subsequent generations of great minds to advanced the knowledge of man--that led to the technologically advanced society of today. If this is true for statistical science as well, why are we so far off the mark in its application today in finance? My curiosity led me to Prof. Klein's wonderfully well written and well-researched book.

Prof. Klein showed that the history of statistical thoughts is not a romantic linear improvement of theorems built upon the great minds of the past (as most people would imagine). In fact, the current modeling paradigm represents a historical legacy of different school of thoughts and the squabbling between diverse ideas. As one school gets more popular and attracted a larger following, that idea became the dominant theory, not unlike the evolution of major religions. In an easy-to-read narrative style (to be fair, some knowledge of statistics is required to digest the book), the book leads to the startling and disturbing realization that our failed statistics of today (in finance/ economics) may have come from the evolution of ideas that have taken a wrong turn in history!

Without spoiling the suspense, my takeaway from the book is, let me use a quote of warning from the book:
"Measurement does not necessarily mean progress. Failing the possibility of measuring that which you desire the lust for measurement may, for, example, merely result in your measuring something else - and perhaps forgetting the difference - or in your ignoring some things because they cannot be measured."

This book is more relevant today than in the past, as practitioners, as if awakened by the global financial crisis in 2008, is starting to question the econometrics of today. A historical perspective (as accounted by Prof. Klein) helps us see the dogma of today's curriculum in a more open way. This book is a rare gem--I bought a copy for my own collection after reading it.

Great resource!

Thick book, Goes into great depth on each subject. Can be read straight through or as a reference book to look up individual subjects. As the Operations Manager at a medium size manufacturing facility I found this book to be well worth the price. There are some subjects that seem only feasible for an organization the size of the US military or GM and I have to wonder how big of a readership the author thought he would have among those top .1% of managers. Planning a central call center for our maintenance program is just not feasible but it doesn't detract from the book in any way. You have to discern whats needed at your organization and once you determine that this book will become a well used resource.

Where is this place?

The information is good. The book is a good reference. But really, where is this place that gives so many resources to the maintenance department. There are planners, buyers, schedulers, researchers, secretaries, etc…
In most places I have worked there is 1 boss and he does all of that. I would like to apply for a position at whatever location these people are talking about. If you buy this book just keep it as a guideline nothing more.
