About the Author
Robin D.G. Kelley is a professor of history and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California. From 2003-2006, he was the William B. Ransford Professor of Cultural and Historical Studies at Columbia Univeristy. From 1994-2003, he was a professor of history and Africana�Studies at New York University�as well the chairman of NYU's history department from 2002-2003.

One of the youngest tenured professors in a full academic discipline--at the age of 32--Kelley has spent most of his career exploring American and African-American history with a particular emphasis on African-American musical culture, including jazz and hip-hop.

FINE IN DEPTH LOOK AT MONK'S LIFE AND MUSIC

588 pages,including acknowledgments,appendices,notes,and compositions by Monk. This adds up to 129 pages out of the total. The paper used is a cream-white,and the the type-face is straight forward,clean and,together,make for an easy read. There are 16 pages of black and white photographs,starting with Monk's parents,on through his family,and several of Monk playing on the bandstand. These are a valuable addition,and give some depth to the writing.

This is an important book on Thelonious Monk. Not only his music,but an in-depth look at the person behind the music. The author,Robin Kelley,delved into Monk's life for ten years,with access to family papers and private recordings. In doing so Kelley has produced the first book to accurately portray what made Monk "tick". Many books talk about Monk the "hipster",the jazz player who wore hats (believe it or not,this was thought to be important) not in keeping with the current fashion of the day,the outspoken man who most deemed overly critical,and,an eccentric. Was Monk temperamental? Absolutely. Did he act in ways outside "normal" behavior? Yes. Was Monk a true eccentric? Probably most certain. But in this well written book the author digs deeply into Monk's life,starting with his upbringing,his family ties and influence,his early life,jail,and his mental and physical disorders,his one true love in life,Nellie,and his many friends (Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter for example),and associates in the music world.

This book shows why Monk--was Monk. His mother's encouragement to follow his own path,early in Monk's life,set him on his own individual path. The many people who misunderstood Monk (Bill Evans,for example,thought Monk's musical ability was because he was not exposed to Western music forms-not true),which led to the popular myth of Monk being some sort of musical savant,who had little knowledge of the "outside" world. In reality,Monk worked very hard at his music,and even harder to achieve his own individualistic sound. As for his perceived eccentricities,in this book Monk is shown to be a devoted family man,a man who was generous to his friends,but was also incredibly honest in his opinions and at times was brutally honest to a fault. His mental illness,and it's affects on not only his music,but his life are also brought into context with his views on people and life. In addition,readers get a good view of jazz,in N.Y. City,in the forties and fifties,into the sixties,and the many musicians who Monk employed,and played with on the bandstand.

Above all,Monk had a genuine love for music,especially his own,and that comes through clearly in this great book. Not only do readers (and listeners of his music) learn more about his music,that in the past,was sorely lacking,they get to know the man behind this incredible music. If you're not familiar with Monk's music,check out his album "Brilliant Corners",or his early stuff on Blue Note Records,or his superb (2 CD) solo recordings on Columbia records,for examples of his writing and playing skills. If you aren't familiar with these albums,I envy you your hearing this music for the first time. For anyone who listens to Monk's music and wonders,what kind of person could write such powerful,evocative music-this book will give the answers. Monk's music can be enjoyed to an even greater extent,after reading this well researched,well written book,on one of jazz's greatest composers and musicians.

Monk in perspective

If you're interested in jazz, post war urban American history or just enjoy reading well written biographies...buy this book. Deftly written, extremely well researched and highly readable this book is a great acheivemment.

Being a professional musician I have read many music bios (jazz and otherwise) and this ranks among the best. Robin Kelley clearly has a love for his subject and as an amateur pianist he writes intelligently about Monk and his music. But don't expect this book to be an academic bore. His detailed account of Monk, his circle of musician friends and the clubs he played made me feel like I was there. I could smell the cigarette smoke and hear the jam sessions at Minton's and feel the atmosphere of the San Juan Hill neighborhood where Monk grew up and lived for so many years. You'll find yourself in the back of a TV repair shop where pianists (known and unknown) jammed and shared ideas and eavesdrop on rehearsals at Monks apartment and Hall Overton's loft...and so much more.

Kelley had unprecedented access to the Monk family archives and in every step of the book it shows. But more importantly Kelley is a great writer that weaves the details into a saga of post war African American life. Perhaps most importantly, Kelley debunks the myth of Monk as some sort of idiot savant or "noble savage" that inherited his genius by osmosis. Monk worked damn hard to create his art and Kelly takes you along every step of the way. Poignant, funny, sad and triumphant this book's got it all covered. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Monk- A labor of love

I approached this book with trepidation..there have been so many bios of Monk,Trane,Miles...and the 700 page hardbound looked a fearsome mix of dry research and lofty pronouncements. My scepticism rapidly gave way to ceaseless absorption as I devoured the pages..Not since Ross Russell's 'Bird Lives' have I torn though a biography of an artiste one has revered over the decades
Painstakingly researched and passionately written with a strong story line,"Monk" grips the reader from start to finish.The author gets behind the Monk character and psyche to portray what made him tick,how did he think and what went behind the man whose compositions and playing style continue to captivate millions even today as it confused thousands during his time.One lives and breathes each scene as you sit along with Monk as he relentlessly composes each of his tunes, rehearses with his sidemen and makes his recordings.

You are with him and the other greats at his gigs at Mintons, Five Spot, the 52nd Street clubs, Newport and all of Europe You are by his side as he scuffles and suffers poverty,house fires,mental illness,ridicule by critics and social ostracization....before gaining recognition.. You come within talking and breathing distance of Diz, Bird,Coltrane,Miles,Charlie Rouse,Bud Powell,Elmo Hope, and so many more that one has heard and read about.... its unbelievably realistic...
If you are a jazz person, this book has to be by your bedside, not just on your shelf

In 2006, Lyerly began the Good Birth Project, a landmark research study that asks the question: What constitutes a good birth in the eyes of the childbearing women? Her research team conducted interviews with 101 mothers about their birth experiences, and the results of that study serve as the basis for this insightful book: an effort to craft a notion of the good birth that turns... on what women say is deeply at issue for them. While the book is aimed at mothers and soon-to-be-mothers, Lyerly also has an important message for the medical community, midwives, and other birth advocates who are in the middle of an important but polarizing debate (medical vs. natural childbirth), in which women lose. Lyerly admits that no doubt there is and will likely continue to be some degree of tension between obstetrics and midwifery, but she attempts to make a place in the conversation for women's voices. Those on the side of midwifery may yet dismiss Lyerly as a medically trained and practicing obstetrician and the mother of four children who were all born by cesarean. But she also notes that every women does deserves a midwife, or rather, the kind of care that treats childbirth as a profoundly emotional and transitional experience, and that respectfully fosters a mother's agency, personal security, and connectedness. A must read for every expectant parent and provider.

Well thought and balanced view on birth practices in USA. Throughout the book I couldn't stop thinking "I wish you were my doctor/midwife" when I had my children. Loved her insight and love for women/babies. The book brought much validation for my own grieving of the good birth I have missed in both of my labors and answered many research questions I had about the biopsychosocial loss some women experience after a negative childbirth experience.

Some reviews about this handbook sound quite enthusiastic, a few do not.

First of all, I should like to make clear that I am not new to studying ancient and modern languages, both by myself or with a teacher.

I have decided to take up Greek seriously (a long standing wish) on my own to give my passion for historical lingustics a sounder basis and I bought several British and American textbooks as there is no self study material in Italian.

There is no doubt about Dr Jones being competent, that is wholly out of question. I like his humour too, his light hearted way of illustrating grammar as if it were real fun: I may be a linguist in the core but I find learning declensions by heart just a little more easy than a common high school pupil would therefore heartily welcoming any device that can make things more palatable.

Up to chapter five (included) things are just fine. I do not like (well, I abhor) the leaving the accents aside, but this is very common way in Anglo-american textbooks: I see no reason why it should be so but so it is and one cannot blame Dr Jones too much for doing just the same.
Accents aside, learning is easy and entertaining and you really get the impression of making the most of your time.

From chapter six things get sticky. Grammar is still nicely illustrated but the examples and excercises are no longer up to the task of making you learn what has been so entertainingly explained. Reasoning leads one near to nowhere: one must begin learning by heart and doing the (few) excercises again and again in the attempt of memorizing vocabulary and constructions.

An even stickier problem is the choice of readings. Probably in the attempt of confronting his reader with real texts to awaken his/her interest, Dr Jones is just too eager in introducing nearly unadulterated Greek passages.
Such passages must be preceded by discouragingly long vocabulary lists not to mention the fact that this vocabulary is seldom useful later on; this is why I took no pleasure in reading Thucidides or Socrates as boasted on the book cover.

A minor but irritating fault is the lack of answer key translation for those readings taken from the New Testament. "Use your Bible" is not satisfactory for someone who wishes a self contained handbook, not to mention that there are several translations of the Bible and that, for the purpose of learning, a literal if unattractive translation could be of more use than the usual ones.

In my opinion one could use the first chapters of this book to break the ice but should go on with a different text or be prepared for a lot of self imposed supplementary work.

Keeps it lively and fun

Peter Jones makes a potentially dry subject a great deal of fun. He weaves his dry sense of humor into the lessons, with the occasional anachronistic pun thrown in there for good effect. I really love his teaching style.

Great for learning and review

I have the earlier 1999 printing of this book, and have recently gone back and worked through it again for a review of the basics. I'm well studied in French, German and Latin, using more "formal" books for those languages. I regret that I didn't use Jones' Latin book (although I'm contemplating getting it just for the fun of it), and that there aren't comparable texts for modern languages!

Jones is not only an entertaining teacher (even in print), but a wise one. As other reviewers have said, he organizes otherwise daunting information in small, easily grasped nuggets. He also keeps the pace moving along, so that the self-study doesn't become laborious. It does get a little more difficult midway through: after chapter 11, you'll find yourself multitasking with reviewing (so not to forget) past vocabulary and grammar, tackling new material, and trying not to get frustrated with increasingly more complex exercises. Yet fret not, as Jones makes this inevitable hump in learning any language as easy and accessible as possible (mind you, he warns us of this challenge at the start).

My only gripe, which isn't really a bad one, is that I found both times through the book that once I got past chapter 13, I actually wanted more exercises and more reading segments. Somehow, I felt a little in disbelief that I had actually covered very much and wanted the reassurance. However, despite seeming "lightweight" by comparison to other texts, the book does cover a significant amount of essential Greek vocabulary and grammar that any beginner needs. The first time through, I found I was able to read many Greek texts with the only a lexicon for unfamiliar vocabulary. The second time through, I was even more impressed with how pithy and fun yet thorough the text is, which made it not just a great introductory text, but the prefect method for review.

Maybe not for beginners, but nothing much for the advanced.

Some nice samples of comic art, with basic 'how to draw people' info. Unfortunately the author never really shows a direct connection between the two. Something about exaggerating motion and form would have been helpful.
About 1/4 to 1/3 of the book covers developing a complete comic, that is finally inked in B/W. But nothing about using color. Nothing about getting work 'camera ready' and / or how to digitalize it.
I think some of Burne Hogarth timeless books would be a much better investment

Still not the ultimate guide to drawing comics

Another handsome volume on drawing comics from Watson Guptill. And Kubert School graduate Andy Smith uses this book to take you through the basics of drawing comics figures and arranging them in panels. What you make of the book will be determined by your tastes and drawing level.
Though it claims to be for any talent level, I don't believe this book would be useful for a complete beginner. While drawing heads and figures are well-represented, he mysteriously omits instruction on hands and feet. As these are the two major stumbling blocks for tons of aspiring artists, this omission is a bit puzzling.
Smith's style is the heavily exagerated muscle style that some desperately want to emulate (I'm not one of them, myself, but that hasn't affected my rating). There are only a few examples of other artists' styles, and many of them are from Bart Sears, who makes Smith look restrained in his depiction of the heavily muscled. It would have been nice to have a discussion of different ways of representing the super-heroic musculature ranging from cartoon simple to ultra-powerful over-realistic.
The section on inking is helpful, but only if you know how to use the tools already. Though the user is encouraged to use a brush, there's no mention of the correct manner of holding the brush. You are told it takes a great deal of practice to use a brush, but not how to go about that practice.
On the good side, there are great discussion on panel layout and flow, using reference materials, drawing the face in different ways and in different ages and a very good guide to the different facial features. The writing is clear, the art well executed and the teaching style encouraging.
For someone serious about drawing comics, this is a worthwhile addition for your bookshelf. But don't start here. I'd personally start with Christopher Hart's How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains, which covers the same ground as this book while including most of the omissions I mentioned above. And for working on your figures, I highly recommend How to Draw Anime and Game Characters: Basics for Beginners and Beyond (don't be put off by the manga base for this book, it will benefit anyone interested in comics).

Better than the others, so far...

Granted this book isn't particularly special and covers pretty much the same sort of basics, fundamental principles, etc, as a lot of the other 'how to draw comics' books out there - it's a bit different and somewhat better by comparison. It's extremely tough to find a good 'how to...' book out there that covers both basics and more advanced areas which is also helpful and satisfying for most people with different needs for it. I have searched many bookstores and I found pretty much the same sort of thing every time. In the end I thought of which one was more informative, precise and practical without being overly stressful, repetitive or boring. One that didn't rely on flashy colourful examples or reference material that looks great but doesn't really guide you in the right direction. I thought this one was one of the better ones, if not the best. I thought some of the other books really focused more on the finished product and work which was appealing, slick and contemporary-looking - but there wasn't much of a guideline for how to achieve those sort of results. They sort of suggested that most serious comic-drawers draw in the same style. This one isn't really an exception in that way, the same sort of old-fashioned aesthetics and ideals apply. However, I felt this book covered most areas further and the points were not as strict or stubborn. Anything you learn from this book can be loosened and applied to your own individual style. I also felt that this book was easier to understand, adventurous and fun. This is one of the best 'how to...' books so far. It explores most areas further than the other books and introduces new themes. It's probably not what some comic-drawers are hunting for but it's better than most the others
(that are more accessible) and it's also excellent for those who want to recap a lot of things.

It's all about the journey...

The term 'project financing' was coined and first used in the early editions of this book to segregate and describe certain kinds of instruments and certain types of transactions with unique characteristics which enabled promoters of a project financing transaction to shift debt burden, operating risk and accounting liabilities to third parties, while at the same time retaining significant benefits of the project. In the ensuing years the term project financing has acquired a unique definition as a financing with off-balance sheet and shifted liability characteristics.

In a project financing, the project, its assets, its contracts, its inherent economics and its cash flows are segregated from its promoters or sponsors in order to permit a credit appraisal and loan to the project, independent of the sponsors. While in the final analysis lending to a project requires strong credit support from some source, frequently this support can be accomplished in an indirect or contingent manner which may have little or no impact upon the sponsor's debt capacity when compared to a direct borrowing. In some circumstances the credit of third parties unrelated to the sponsor can be used to support the credit standing of the project.

Since the first edition was published, the financial and capital markets have undergone tremendous change and a host of new structures and instruments have been created to meet the financing needs of businesses. Traditional commercial banking has been severely displaced by new financial instruments and products. While those of us in the financial business might like to think we are getting smarter in designing new products, a major reason for this rapid development is undoubtedly due to the more efficient dissemination of information and sharing ideas as a result of improved and more rapid communication. Information including techniques for financial analysis which used to be restricted to a few so-called experts is now available to anyone with an up-to-date personal computer through readily accessible data information services, the internet, and off the shelf software. The information age has arrived, and the future looks bright indeed for development of new and useful financing techniques.

The age of electronic data transfer and the internet has also given rise to financing internet start-up companies by methods that defy the traditional rules of project finance. Such financing which is often based solely upon rosy unsubstantiated financial forecasts is confined to equity related securities that are usually provided by professional venture capital firms (called VCs) or professional venture capital funds. Both the risks and possible rewards are huge. While this is a narrow exception to the rules of project finance, it deserves mention as an exception.

This book does not hold itself out as having the pretensions of an intellectual treatise. Rather, it is merely intended to provide a conceptual starting point for the further development of the reader's ideas on project financing. It is hoped that it may also serve as a useful checklist for specific project financings. Perhaps more important, however, the book is a compendium of concepts and structures that can be applied at any stage in the analysis of an anticipated or proposed project financing.

Although largely based on methods developed and widely used in the United States, the ideas and concepts presented can be profitably employed by financial managers worldwide. Project financing is global financing, and financial executives everywhere will find that the successful conclusion to such financing depends in no small measure upon the bringing together of a number of disciplines, experts and analytical techniques. This book attempts to provide a useful road map as to how to marshal those resources for an effective and profitable result.

A project financing requires careful planning at its early stages in order to achieve the maximum desired result of a segregated financing at as low a price as possible. The entity to house the project must be carefully chosen. Financial instruments to be used to evidence debt obligations and equity must be reviewed. Joint venture partners or investors and lenders must be carefully selected. Borrowing options must be preserved. Any supply contracts or sales contracts must be carefully drafted.

The operating climate and political stability of the environment for the project must be satisfactory. A system of laws protecting property rights of creditors and owners must be in place. A stable and predictable rule of law is a crucial ingredient for project financing. In the final analysis, the ultimate financial engineering of a project financing is only limited by the imagination and care of the financial adviser in making use of the circumstances of the transaction and the tools at hand.
