Outstanding

This outstanding text of e4 openings is probably the best e4 openings book available. You won't find a better book covering the e4 openings aside from books dedicated exclusively to a particular opening. Providing the reader with crisp and clear introductions and overviews of each opening, it goes on to gives walk-thrus with complete analysis of the various lines of the opening. More so where many books will give you the various lines they don't delve into the philosophy behind the opening, what you are ultimately aiming to accomplish (kingside/queenside attack, destruction of your opponent's pawn structure, etc) that other books, odd as it seems, leave out and don't bother covering. The ideas of each opening, each line, even each move and why you make the move at that point and not earlier or later are all covered.

For anyone who has never really understood openings, for an experienced player who wants a clear vision of the openings, or for a novice even who wants to start strengthening their opening game with specific opening skills, this is the book. Until you get to perhaps a 2000+ level and are winning small tournaments and have your own coach, this book will be the coach you've always wanted and needed.

Just starting the d4 book now and cannot wait as I know my knowledge will be expanded yet again. Great book in what undoubtedly is a great series. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Buy this book and save time and money.

Parents of players and school coaches should all have this in their library. If you are looking for a great gift for that special player in your life, don't hesitate to buy this for them. They will thank you for years to come.

Comprehensive, well laid out, and understandable

The same comments apply to all four volumes, and I recommend getting them all if you get any. I don't have an official rating, but other players tell me I'd probably be around 1400-1500 so bear that in mind when reading my comments. These books go way beyond anything I will need in the near future, but they are laid out in a way that makes them easily accessible. Many chess books are so dense that you need to be an expert to keep track of what they are talking about, but these ones break the variations down into small enough pieces that you can follow each one. Each opening is subdivided in a way that makes sense, and these are books that you can actually skim through or browse without getting bogged down. I'm not expert enough to memorize dozens of openings. I play on general principles but I do want to get three or four moves into the game without falling into some obscure trap, and I think these books are good for finding a generic opening strategy that suits you and which you can adapt for when you aren't sure what to do. The one thing I really find annoying the absence of an index. For example, if there is a cross reference to the 'Tarrasch Defense' I would like to be able to find it.

Comprehensive Openings for Intermediate Players

This is the first volume, covering just E-4 openings. Good graphics, uses colors and arrows to show possible lines/variations. Sometimes at the end of some variations the book doesn't show the resulting position as a diagram, so with those you'd need to set up a board if you cannot visualize it. One of the best features is that there is a lot of narrative describing the purpose of the moves, the type of game the variations lead into, and often some interesting historical info, such as when a line went into or out of favor, and why. At the end of each section there are high-level sample games with the specific opening for that section, though I haven't bothered with playing through those, I confess. This book has helped break out of repetitive opening moves, and made my games more interesting to me, even with just learning the first 3-4 moves of an opening. After those moves, I am on my own using general opening principles with decent results.

Dr. Scott Isaksen is President of the Creative Problem Solving Group, and Senior Fellow of its Creativity Research Unit. A former professor and director of the Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State College, he has published over 130 books, articles and chapters in books. To develop the maps, Van Dam and his team visited Cuba in 2013 under a U.S. self-certification program administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control that permits U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba independently to conduct research. With the prospect of sanctions being lifted in the near future, Van Dam is already planning more Cuba projects across new media, starting with a website mapping the influence of the clave, an instrument that figures widely in Cuban music, around the world. VanDam's StreetSmart The paper map may be old-fashioned, but when it comes to Cuba, Van Dam is ahead of the curve. Havana is currently a dark spot on Google Street Maps, and Google hasn't yet released a statement saying when the company will upgrade its coverage. Even if Street Maps did work there, though, there are no guarantees it would have very many users in the near future. With Internet coverage at a scant 5 percent across the country and download speeds reminiscent of the pre-dial-up era, Cuba doesn t yet have the digital infrastructure to support cell phone cartography. Stephan Van Dam, AIGA is an award-winning cartographer, graphic designer, and information architect. He is the president, principal and creative director of New York-based VanDam Publishing. Twenty-seven of his maps are in the MoMA Collection.

The universal power of maps has been his guiding passion for the past 25 years and fuels his desire to tell stories and construct new realities through maps in all media. He's has mapped over 85 world cities, and holds several patents in the field of paper engineering and origami map folding.

His work has been honored by the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA), the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the editors of ID magazine and has been featured on national television and been sighted in numerous feature films.

A fantastic guide for your upcoming and long overdue trip to Cuba! That long worm of an island must be a mapmakers nightmare - but Van Dam manages to turn it into a sexy item, folded elegantly, and smoothly sliding into your pocket, as you cruise the highways of Cuba in your vintage American car. Detailed small windows of special attractions such as Varadero or Cayo Coco accompany the map. I find the little red dots ("curiosidad") especially intriguing. There are a lot of them, awaiting the curious. I think I will go, soon! Accompanied, of course, by this lovely and highly useful map. Vamonos!

I've been to Cuba and seeing these new maps is a bit like being there once again - which is now much easier thanks to the State Department's new attitude towards our island neighbor to the south and to this terrific new map. So my advice, buy the map, pack your back and head to Cuba before Mickey Mouse gets there - you'll be glad you did.

Lovely book for an inspired drink WHOS TIME HAS COME

Had to chase a few bottles down once I read Brads description. I've had many types since my introduction to amaro (thanks brother-in-law!).
Found a place yrs ago that does flights. I'm ready to go beyond beginner status with my digestif! Thank you historic wisdom! This can settle my tummy like nobody's business.
Makes me want to tour Italy w the perfect amaro (I'm sure there's more than one!)as my goal! Actually it almost feels I have.
I've converted all those willing to my obsession.

Great information on world of amaro

I recently got interested in the world of Italian amaro, primarily to make variations of Negronis and other craft cocktails. This is a wonderful book.
Mr. Parsons gives you a lot of information about various amaro and gives you recipes for cocktails and food using amaro. It also is filled with beautiful photos. I've found some of the amao described in the book (Campari, which is available most anywhere, and more scarce Aperol, Cynar and Fernet Branca) and the book has inspired me to search out in liquor stores the harder to find ones. Many are available only in Italy, which makes me want to visit Italy again. Salud!

I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about Italian amari and still learned a ton about them from this book. This is an invaluable resource for anyone from beginners to experts on the subject. Great photos and beautiful overall layout. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in these spirits.

It’s been a few years since I’ve done that and when I saw this new book I remembered how much I enjoyed his books

Thirty years ago, I read every Dean Koontz book that I could get my hands on. I looked forward to each new book and went to second hand book stores to find ones that I didn’t have or hadn’t read. I did that for the next 10-12 years and then I’m still not sure whether it was me or that the stories were different. I ended up not reading any new books that came out or any ones that I had not read. But, off and on I would pick up a few of the books and reread them. It’s been a few years since I’ve done that and when I saw this new book I remembered how much I enjoyed his books.
So, I got the book and I have to say this is the Dean Koontz that I remember reading. I picked it up and could barely put it down and finished it over two days. It was a good fast pace, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me on my toes. As with the other books I’ve read Mr. Koontz weaves some real life current technology and mixes it with what if or where can the technology go. Very much like Moonlight, Watchers and some of the Leigh Nichols books. I would highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the continuation of this series.

Enigmatic "They" pursue rogue FBI operative cross-country in this edge-of-your-seat thriller

The Silent Corner is by far Dean Koontz best offering in many years. He’s not depending on strange occult or phantasmagoric story lines to keep the action moving. Instead he’s crafted Jane Hawk, an FBI operative, who is forced to go rogue when she stumbles upon a plot conjured by a mad scientist. It seems he’s created a method of mind control reminiscent of Manchurian Candidate wickedness.

Jane, with her husband dead at the hands of this evil faction and her son in hiding, must singlehandedly keep one step ahead of her pursuers and the FBI who are tracking down one of their own who’s stepped over the line. She is being chased by the enigmatic “They”. The people who have done all of the bad stuff since the start of time. “They” who live in the closet or the basement. “They” who are willing to go to great lengths of rid the world of anything that is not within the bounds of their conspiracy.

Jane befriends some unseemly characters who help her in the flight across country using her skills as a well-trained FBI agent. She’s forced to stay mostly off the grid using burner phones, a variety of cash bought vehicles, and library internet. No matter how far or fast she runs her pursuers are only a half-step behind. This is a heart pounding chase with good being pursued by evil which is Koontz trademark metaphor and what he does best.

At its heart this is a thriller with a lot of cutting edge technology tossed in to keep this new and smart heroine on her game. Koontz is a master story-teller and I am left wanting more. Quickly, Dean, quickly.

When I grow up, I want to be Jane Hawk!

Once upon a time, I read every Dean Koontz book I could get my hands on. I even went to the library and got the books under his pen name (Leigh Nichols).

But somewhere along the way, the books changed. They got…mystical. And I kind of lost interest. I’ve ventured back and have found that I liked the last couple of books.

This one, I loved. My Dean Koontz love is back!

Jane Hawk is the bad ass of bad asses. She is so awesomely tough and passionate and everything you wish you could be. The action is spot on. The crime in question – extremely devious. If it weren’t for work, this would have been a one-sitting read. As it was, I finished it in two.

This is book one and, while it’s not precisely a cliffhanger, there are unanswered questions. Usually, that bugs me. In this case, I simply can’t wait for the next book!

Unrelenting, compelling, and a thriller that deserves the title! Book 2 now, please!

Ryken doesn't disappoint us in his exposition

As expected, Dr. Ryken doesn't disappoint us in his exposition. I am finding this an invaluable resource in my study of this extraordinary book of the OT. Whether you are preparing sermons, Bible studies, or simply want a deeper appreciation of God's active grace in covenant.....the Reformed Expository Commentary series will aid in your quest!

Excellent Commentary

The Reformed Expository Commentary is a series that aims to provide a fresh exposition of the Biblical text for today's generation. In the series introduction the series editors (Phil Ryken & Richard Phillips) lay out the four fundamental commitments in this series. They are:

1) To be biblical - that is to pay careful attention to the text and exposit the Scriptures. There is less focus on the original language and structure and more focus on the story that the passage is telling.
2) Unashamedly Doctrinal - this series approaches the text from a Reformed perspective, as found in the Bible.
3) Redemptive-Historical - this means that they believe in the unity and continuity of the Bible, and interpret it in a Christ centered approach for all of Scripture.
4) Practical - by applying the truths found in the Scriptures to contemporary challenges in life.

Just a brief comment on aesthetics. This Commentary also looks great. While this isn't a huge selling point, and certainly not a reason to chose one commentary over another, I must say that this one looks really nice on the bookshelf, especially when you have more than one in the series.

Philip Graham Ryken is the contributor for the volume on 1 Kings and I was thoroughly blessed by his contribution. His exposition is very readable for pastor and layman alike. This commentary, just like others in the series, reads like a book. I think it would be wonderful for sermon preparation, personal study or as a devotional read. Ryken divides the book into three clear parts. Part one focuses on King Solomon. Ryken provides a helpful look at Solomon's successes and failures and helps the reader look forward to our final King, Jesus. A great example of this comes in his section on the cloud descending on the finished temple in 1 Kings 8. First Ryken helps us to see just how holy and glorious God is. He states, "the temple was the one place on earth where people could go and meet with God, through the ministry of a priest. But when the temple was finally open for business, no none could enter because God was too glorious! The true and living God cannot be put in a box, even a box as beautiful as Solomon's temple." He continues, "this cloud was infinitely the most glorious thing at the temple, which for all its golden splendor was made glorious only by the presence of God." What a challenging statement even for us today. For, "unless the Lord is with us, none of the work we do in the church - none of the teaching and preaching, none of the caring and sharing, none of the mercy work or missionary evangelism - will make any difference for the kingdom of God." Just as the temple was useless unless God was in it, so to the church (the people) are useless unless God is behind and directing their actions. What a wonderful application for modern day readers! Ryken also shows the eschatological implications of the presence of God in the temple. Just as these OT people saw God's glory, the disciples too saw God's glory at Jesus' transfiguration, and we now see God's glory through His revealed Word...One day we will all fully see His glory when "we are ushered into the glorious presence of God." What a wonderful thought to dwell on!

Part two focuses on the divided kingdom. Many times sections like this can be looked over in the Bible as just a historical account of what took place. While this is true, it is helpful for us to see what caused these troubles (men trying to do things their way instead of God's) and to find appropriate applications for our lives. Here Ryken is helpful in doing just that. Part three focuses on the prophet Elijah and is helpful just like section two, but in the opposite direction. Often times when we see "successful" people in the Bible we can tend to focus on their character and achievements and overlook God. Ryken points the reader to a great and powerful God working through Elijah, not God being fortunate enough to have Elijah on His team. This is an important distinction that has many practical implications in our daily lives, the most obvious being: Do I rely on my own strength or on God's power? Elijah provides a wonderful testimony of the power of God working through an obedient, although not perfect man.

If you enjoy studying the Word of God and are looking for a solid commentary that is readable and will profit you greatly, then do yourself a favor and purchase this commentary. Ryken helps to expound the Old Testament text, show how and where it points to Christ, our ultimate King, and provide helpful application for 21st century readers. It is well worth it and would make a wonderful companion to the book of 1 Kings.

This is a great series of commentaries. He is able to take the verses in chunks based on related narratives and pull in Samuel, Chronicles and other books of the Bible to expand the related information to increase my knowledge of the 1 Kings. Then he used current examples to relate the lessons and understanding of how this is important to my understanding today. I felt that the examples and information really gave me a bigger picture of the history of Israel and how that brought the narrative of redemption to a fulfillment. Dr. Ryken did a good job of making the material readable and understandable without being redundant or overusing information. These commentaries are extremely helpful and useful.
