No previous background in semantics is assumed, as students begin by discovering the value and fascination of the subject and then move through all key topics in the field, including sense and reference, simple logic, word meaning and interpersonal meaning. New study guides and exercises have been added to the end of each unit to help reinforce and test learning. Excellent for getting into the topic of semantics
By revbill
This text does a fine job of leading the reader into the topic of semantics. Frequent exercises help the reader/student make sure first-concepts are secure, before moving on to the next step. I might have preferred more explanation of definitions and principles at various points, but it's a good supplement to more technical volumes like John Lyons' two-volume classic.

No page numbers

No page numbers, makes it really hard to follow along in class, by now I've learned never to buy kindle versions of textbooks

Love it!
By Elise
I had to buy this book for my semantics and pragmatics class, but I never thought I would love it! Not only is the content interesting, but it's given in a dynamic, exciting, and clear way. None of that boring textbook prose here. The text is broken up into smaller chunks, or subtitles, that make it easy to understand and process. The book is also full of mini exercise that you do as you read, since some of the concepts are better taught by example than by definition. But the exercises aren't boring or tedious. They're just as interesting as the rest of the book. This book is a really great tool for beginning learners of semantics (and maybe even some more advanced learners too).
