Mary McLeod Bethune was often called the First Lady of Negro America, but she made significant contributions to the political climate of Florida as well. She created an environment in Daytona Beach that, despite racial tension throughout the state, allowed Jackie Robinson to begin his journey to integrating Major League Baseball less than two miles away from her school. Today, her legacy lives through a number of institutions, including Bethune-Cookman University and the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation National Historic Landmark. Historian Ashley Robertson explores the life, leadership and amazing contributions of this dynamic activist.

About the Author
Ashley N. Robertson, PhD, was born in Oxford, North Carolina, and is a curator and museum director for the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation-National Historic Landmark at Bethune-Cookman University, where she is also an assistant professor of history. Dr. Robertson graduated from Howard University in 2013 with a PhD in African Diaspora History and she also holds a bachelors degree in business administration from Bowie State University and a master of arts in African American Studies from Temple University.

Great Biography of The Great Mary McLeod Bethune

This book was such a wonderful surprise. I was born on Mary McLeod Bethune's birthday and I have always felt an affinity for her so I have read a fair amount of books about her but this one taught me new things. Though the title states that it is about Mrs. Bethune in Florida, it also discusses her extensive international connections. The pictures are such a wonderful enhancement to the words. This is a great book for educators, entrepreneurs, institution builders and ambassadors. She was all of these and more.

Wonderful Book!

I had the pleasure of being led on a tour of the Mary McLeod Bethune Foundation House on July 9th. I visit Daytona Beach every other year and since 2009, I have wanted to visit her home and the campus. I was thrilled when I found out that a great birthday celebration was being held during the same week that I was visiting this year! I have since purchased and finished reading this book. For years I struggled to identify a personal hero, but Dr. Bethune’s faith, leadership and commitment to our people has brought her to the top of my list. Thank you so much Dr. Robertson for this wonderful book and for preserving the legacy of this great woman as you reign as the world expert on ‘all things Mary McLeod Bethune’!
