Published in 1962. Old wisdom that pertains today.

This is a book published in 1962. Old wisdom? I think not. Barbara Ward captured a very important point regarding the rich nations and the poor nations. She writes that the rich nations have mastered the critical requirement of saving. Here are her words.
"Then there is another big change which alters the relationship. It is quite simply that the West has completed its 'break-through' to modernization and the emergent nations have not. Above all they have not completed the first, hard, even merciless, phase of early saving." (taken from page 34)
She goes on to advise that the West has already completed this phase and therefore makes up the majority of the "rich" nations.
If her words are true (and I believe they are), then we are no longer in the position of strength we used to hold. At 17 trillion dollars in debt, we are definitely not saving.

Brilliant Synthesis

Few people are likely to be attracted to a book written almost 50 years ago. However, Ms. Ward has brilliantly synthesized why rich nations have developed and poor nations have failed. The key to her thinking is the challenges a population faces as it struggles to survive. This view may now be revisited from a different viewpoint as emerging nations have their struggle for pre-eminance eased by the accumulated knowledge from the past.
