Excellent for getting into the topic of semantics

This text does a fine job of leading the reader into the topic of semantics. Frequent exercises help the reader/student make sure first-concepts are secure, before moving on to the next step. I might have preferred more explanation of definitions and principles at various points, but it's a good supplement to more technical volumes like John Lyons' two-volume classic.

Love it!

I had to buy this book for my semantics and pragmatics class, but I never thought I would love it! Not only is the content interesting, but it's given in a dynamic, exciting, and clear way. None of that boring textbook prose here. The text is broken up into smaller chunks, or subtitles, that make it easy to understand and process. The book is also full of mini exercise that you do as you read, since some of the concepts are better taught by example than by definition. But the exercises aren't boring or tedious. They're just as interesting as the rest of the book. This book is a really great tool for beginning learners of semantics (and maybe even some more advanced learners too).

About the Author
The author is retired after 31 years in law enforcement, most of that time with the Los Angeles Police Department. During the latter half of his career he specialized in the investigation of forgeries, investment frauds, public corruption, and other sensitive cases. He received his Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia in 1993.

All Political Parties Read

This phamplet spells out very clearly the problems we have with our President. All political parties should set aside their differences and read this with an open mind. It is not a Democrat, Republican, or whatever issue, it is about America as we know it to be. Obama has an agenda that rebukes most everything we hold dear. As to the question of his citizenship, I see little being mentioned about the citizenship status of his father. As I understand ancient law and the constitution, not only does the candidate have to meet certain requirements, so does his(or hers) parents--they too must be citizens of the U.S; and his father was not. If all is well, it would have been so easy for Obama to bring forth all of necessary documents and put the matter to rest. His refusal is a serious problem and reflects extremely poor judgement (or planning), either of which may just result in his impeachment.

A timely warning for America

There is a dark cloud gathering over the free world. It's name is Islam. Most Americans have seen the horrors of jihad and "radical" Muslims on daily television, but few actually understand how the so-called "religion of peace" can be so violent. As with anything, we must first know the well-spring whence comes forth the water. Islam is unlike any Western form of religion / government: The two are one under Islam and Sharia law.

Doctor Kirby has written an easy to read history and explanation of Islam and has given other insights that the 'average' American will find enlightening. Of greater importance, this booklet illustrates a very direct line between President Obama and the Muslim world. In his book, "Audacity of Hope" Mr. Obama is quoted as saying, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." Dr. Kirby's booklet may bring this statement in to sharper focus.

This booklet, though only 45 pages, contains a treasure trove of information for those who wish to understand the differences between Islam and the rest of the world.

Wonderful humor

Embroideries is a wonderfully funny graphic novel detailing the romantic lives of women in Iran. Each woman's story spans just a few pages, but touching, amusing punchlines are delivered every time. The illustrations are lively and gestural, capturing the personalities of Marjane's family and friends. The book is very relatable. It would be a good discussion starter for a book club or a parent broaching the subject of love, romance and courtship to young women.

One of the more amusing stories is told by a woman who, after noticing that her middle aged husband was being distracted from her middle age self by twenty-something women, had plastic surgery that took fat from her behind and used it to perk up her breasts. He loves her new breasts - but in fact is kissing her rear!

Fantastic read for all of us who are striving to control our mind and become better human beings!

I got an advanced copy and quite frankly was expecting it to be another book on holding hands and singing koombaya,but after getting sucked into first few chapters was pleasantly surprised by the valuable contents of this piece. Author clearly is an expert on mind control and the parts on conquering procrastination and destroying anxiety were my favourite. I just feel empowered to take control of my life. I know it is up to me to do the steps/actions, but I am glad that I bumped into this read. I am curious to see the future work of the author since he seems to possess a tremendous potential. If the title doesn't fully capture your attention - just get to the Chapter 2 and notice the phenomenal transformation the author experienced. He has definitely walked the walk and has credibility to help others like himself. Overall, a very solid book on subject that applies to all of us. Thank you for this masterpiece and I hope to see more of your work!

Eloquent, Concise, and Extremely Pertinent Book on Achieving Your Goals

Noam makes a genuine contribution to the one thing that so many of us in the developed world can really benefit from: opportunity. Living in North America there are opportunities everywhere compared to so many other countries in the world. The only limiting factor is how much our willingness and "Mastery of the Mind" can do to take advantage of this privilege we have.

This book has so many different aspects of our human psyche and habits that we can gradually discipline to achieve our goals. Even when we think we've figured it out there's even more room for self improvement presented in this book. I highly recommend everyone to give this a read if you are like me and feel like you suffer from laziness, procrastination, and unneeded stress that needs to be conquered.

The author really wants his readers to succeed and I I accept the challenge to master my mind through all the tips, exercises, and guidance presented.

I'm a naturally anxious person and it's quite easy for me to get lost in my head when I have a lot to do. Especially when daydreaming is more fun than facing reality. However, the points about being present and meditation outlined in this book really stood out to me and I can already feel myself focusing more easily on day to day tasks. Instead of wasting time groaning about how unfair things are that I can't change, I find myself more easily able to accept the things I can change and spend more energy and time on the things that I can. I also quite enjoyed the tone that Noam carries throughout the book. He is an expert in these areas, but felt as if I was gaining personal advice from a good friend. Definitely a must-buy!

"It may seem that we have gone to considerable length to derive a disappointing result, namely, a result that does not oer the seller any more sophisticated selling mechanisms than we are familiar with from elementary microeconomics. However, apart from introducing some technical tools that we use later in more complicated contexts, the reader should appreciate that we have uncovered a rather sophisticated rationale for a familiar everyday phenomenon. This is perhaps analogous to invoking Newton's law of gravity as an explanation of the fact that apples fall o apple trees. The fact is familiar, but the explanation is non-obvious. "

Little Gem

This is one of those little gift books that you observe a proliferation of in spring as people are preparing for graduation and other changes in life. It is truly meant as a gift, and as such it is a great little book. It is almost a work of art; most pages could be reprinted and framed as inspirational art. Most of the material appears to be new work, unlike most books of this type that are a rehash or synthesis of the author's thought or other books.

The way this book is set up you can read it from beginning to end the first time through, then go back to specific chapter's from time to time as a reminder, a challenge or an encouragement. The specific chapters deal with the topics as follows:

1. Freedom - Running Free

2. Truly Human - The Drowning Pool

3. Humility - Rising Out Of The Ashes

4. Grateful - Creating Out Of The Pieces

5. Perseverance - Coming Out Of Nowhere

6. Integrity - The Unifying Power Of Believing

7. We Need God - The Healing Power Of Belonging

8. Perseverance - The Sustaining Power Of Becoming

9. Courage - The Warrior's Heart

10. Generosity - The Generative Spirit

11. Fear God - The Divine Imagination

12. Servanthood - The Greatness of Servanthood

Even though this book comes in at under 120 pages it will help to call you to a deeper relationship with God and to a life lived for others. Some great quotes from the book are:

An inspiring and thought-provoking gift book

Just in time for graduation season, J. Countryman is releasing STAND AGAINST THE WIND, a gift book from inspirational speaker and writer Erwin Raphael McManus. It is a combination of colorful images and photos along with portions from UPRISING: A Revolution of the Soul.

This 120-page gift book is littered with inspirational scriptures and thoughts. McManus is convinced that life is more than just the practice of living but rather an adventure and a journey filled with all kinds of excitement and risk. Everyone is created with a passion to live, and that's more than just fulfilling a list of religious rules. Rather, when we unleash our passion and desires, particularly those that were placed within us by God, then we can more fully live the ultimate life, the Christian life.

McManus writes: "When you make God your primary passion, He transforms all the passions of your heart. The result of this transformation is that it will be God's pleasure to fulfill those passions. When God is your desire, you can trust the passions of your heart. In this state you can most fully live a uniquely passionate life. It is not incidental that the death of Jesus is called The Passion."

In addition, he takes stabs at things that stand in the way of God, including selfish ambition and pride. He points out that people who have an attitude problem more often than not have an arrogance problem. This explains why two different people can have such varied responses to the same issue. The cure for such arrogance is honest humility --- the kind that requires repentance and controlled strength. He asks readers to replace the temptation of greed with the act of generosity. Such giving breeds forgiveness and, thus, healthy relationships with others.

He observes, "Gratitude and forgiveness are inseparable, as are ungratefulness and bitterness. When we are grateful, we see and experience life with a healthy optimism. When we lack gratitude, we move toward pessimism. An ungrateful heart always sees what's wrong with life. The longer we live without gratitude, the more embittered we become."

That's why gratitude naturally spurs optimism. As our hearts become more whole through Christ, they increase in their capacity to both give and receive love. But McManus doesn't stop with just these virtues. He presses on to raise issues of perseverance, courage and integrity. He argues that it's through our integrity that a context is formed for true courage. In other words, integrity comes with integration and becomes what we truly are, and it requires a bit of bravery not just to hide behind masks. In fact, integrity makes it possible for us to live in a heroic way with sincere love for others.

Overall, STAND AGAINST THE WIND is a well-written and well-designed gift book. The writing is truly inspiring, thought-provoking and challenging. And the colorful design adds rather than detracts from McManus's insights and wisdom. Recommend this book to friends who haven't discovered McManus as an author yet or pick up a few copies for the upcoming graduation season. You won't be disappointed.

Uprising on steroids...

Uprising on steroids... is what I've heard this book coined as. It's basically a re-package of Uprising, flashier and in smaller chunks. I can see why it's geared toward the 18-35 market.

I liked uprising more, but I passed it to a close friend who didn't like to read, and he thought it was phenomenal.

My favorite section was Running Free. I've always loved the message of freedom and running wild found in the Scriptures, but there's something also to be said about the trials and disciplines that lead to that life-transforming freedom that we sometimes neglect to mention. A couple quotes from the book:

The transformation of our character is more revolution than reformation. It is forged from battles fought far more than by beliefs held. It emerges out of crisis, not out of classroom.

Our capacity to run free is related to our commitment to stand firm. There is a discipline of the heart that marks the free spirit. All of us long to play the song in our souls, and more of us would do so if it didn't require endless hours of studying the notes.
